The semester is now midway through and this is often a very exciting and busy time
for students. Many plan to go away for spring break. Parents should remind students
to be safe while having fun. Keep in touch with those they travel with and keep in
mind that classes will resume after break
Remind your student that, while spring is a time for much social activity, balance
is also important
What Parents Can Do...
- Encourage your student to begin thinking about making a decision on housing for next
year.
- Keep in touch, but don't call every day!
- Use email, texting, and Facebook as an easy and convenient means of communication.
- Encourage your student to schedule an appointment with his or her advisor for the
summer and fall semesters. Registration will begin in early April.
- Encourage your student to begin thinking about a summer job or internship.
- Advise your student to talk to his or her professors to assess course performance.

1098-T Tax Form
1098-T tax forms were sent out from the University of Memphis during January 2012 for use in filing
2011 taxes. This statement reports the amount of qualified tuition and related expenses
that were billed during the 2011 calendar year.Students now have the option of enrolling
to receive electronic form. However, if your student prefers to continue receiving
a paper form they need not do anything.
if your student's address has changed, they may log into the ECSI Services website as indicated below to print their 1098-T form after they have been mailed. Our office
is unable to give any advice about filing taxes; please contact the IRS or your tax
preparer for those questions.
The benefits to you of receiving electronic notification are:
- Online delivery provides access to the form 1098-T earlier than the traditional mailing
process. You may be able to file your tax return earlier!
- Online delivery eliminates the chance that the 1098-T will get lost, misdirected or
delayed during delivery, or misplaced once the student receives it.
- Signing up for online delivery is easy and secure.
- Students can receive their 1098-T form even while traveling or on assignment away
from their home address.
The 1098-T form for tax years 2006-10 are also available on the ECSI Web site.

Financial Aid
If your student plans to attend the Summer 2012 semester, you can still complete the
2011-2012 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) available on-line at www.fafsa.gov. Listing The University of Memphis’ 6-digit federal school code, 003509, will allow
our office to receive an electronic copy of the FAFSA results. If you have already
completed the 2011-2012 FAFSA for another school, you can go back to your application
and add our school code. Be reminded that your student also needs to be admitted as
degree-seeking to receive any type of federal financial aid, including student loans.
Because Summer is an optional semester, we will have a separate form available on
our website and in our office around the first week in March. For most federal aid
programs, students must be enrolled at least half time at The University of Memphis
to qualify. Remaining Summer eligibility is determined on aid awarded during the Fall
2011 and Spring 2012 semesters.
2012-2013 FAFSA
We encourage EARLY APPLICATION for the 2012-2013 year, so please go on-line to renew
your student’s FAFSA using your 2011 income information. Students who qualify for the Federal Pell Grant
and who are Tennessee residents may also qualify for the state grant. You can estimate your 2011 income for now, but
it is highly recommended that you go back to your student’s FAFSA later to update this information. The Internal
Revenue Service (IRS) is now “linking” your income tax data with FAFSA.
There are a LOT of new federal regulation changes for 2012-2013. Stay informed by visiting our website at www.memphis.edu/financialaid.
If your student has any questions or concerns, please have him/her call our office
at (901) 678-4825 or visit us at Room 103 in Wilder Tower.
If you have a scholarship inquiry, including the HOPE Lottery Scholarship, please
contact the Scholarship Office directly at (901) 678-3213 or go to Room 107 in Wilder Tower.

Residence Life
Spring Break
The University of Memphis residence halls, with the exception of the Living Learning
Complex and Carpenter Complex will close at 12 Noon on Saturday, March 3 and will
reopen on Sunday, March 11 at 1 PM. NO ONE WILL BE ALLOWED TO REMAIN, OR BE READMITTED
TO THE RESIDENCE HALLS DURING THIS TIME. Residents are not required to move their
belongings out of the halls; however, residents should take all valuables with them
when they leave.
Fall 2012/Spring 2013 Room Request
The housing portal is now open to apply for housing. In order to apply for housing, a $45 application
fee is required when completing the application online.
For priority assignment, current residents have the ability to request a room for
the Fall 2012/Spring 2013 semesters through February 24. Current residents may apply
after February 24; however, assignments are made on bases of availability and date
of application.
If there is a financial or judicial hold on the student’s account, the student will
not be able to request a room until these holds are cleared.
Requesting a room is a binding agreement. The student is responsible for any and all
deadlines and rental prepayments associate with the room request. The student will
be receiving information via e-mail and at the permanent address, with specific room
assignment information and the prepayment deadline. Cancellations for the Fall 2012/Spring
2013 Semester housing reservation, must be made by June 1, 2012, in order to not be
responsible for the $200 rental prepayment. Students canceling after June 1 will still
be responsible for the $200 rental prepayment. By neglecting to make the $200 rental
prepayment by the designated deadline, the room may be administratively canceled and
the student will still be responsible for the $200 rental prepayment.
Summer 2011 Room Request
Summer housing will be available in Carpenter Complex. Current residents may request
Summer 2012 housing beginning March 19. For assignment priority, current residents
should submit the application for housing by April 1, 2012.

Opportunities for Science,Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Students
|
Parents of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) majors – encourage
your students to participate in MemphiSTEM! MemphiSTEM is a National Science Foundation-funded
project designed to increase the number of students graduating with STEM degrees at
the University of Memphis. Increasing the number of students pursuing and graduating
with STEM degrees is an issue of local, regional, and national importance. Within
the state of Tennessee alone, it is anticipated that more than 100,000 STEM related
jobs will need to be filled within the next 6 years. MemphiSTEM is a five-year project
(2008-2013) offering a range of opportunities for undergraduates pursuing STEM majors.
There are activities for all levels of students (freshmen to seniors), designed to
increase persistence to graduation in STEM. MemphiSTEM hosts a Mathematics Bridge
Bootcamp each August, which is ideal for freshmen students wanting to refresh mathematics
skills. The Bootcamp also encourages student networking and provides information about
STEM courses and careers. MemphiSTEM also offers learning communities for incoming
freshmen where STEM students take a number of core classes together. There are general
networking events (e.g., lunch and learn events and field trips) and paid research
fellowships for students of all levels. Finally, the project offers mini-grants for
on-campus professional student STEM organizations and travel awards for students to
present work at STEM conferences. Please visit our website for further details (http://www.memphis.edu/memphistem/).
Evaluations of MemphiSTEM indicate that undergraduate students benefit from participating
in the project activities. As well as enjoying the activities, research findings show
that students pursuing STEM degrees who participate in MemphiSTEM activities are more
likely to be retained in their majors and attain higher GPAs than non-participating
STEM students at the University of Memphis. We encourage you to share information
about MemphiSTEM with your STEM student!
