We are excited to have your students back on campus soon! Many students think of January
as a new beginning, a time to improve upon the previous semester. Your student's new
freedom will also require new responsibilities, especially when it comes to managing
finances.
Talk with your student about these responsibilities often. Having a checking account
or credit card may be a completely new experience for your student. You may want to
have a conversation about budgeting expenses, spending habits and paying for their
education.
What Parents Can Do....
- Make sure you student knows what books he or she will need for classes this semester
- Talk with you student about his or her financial needs for the spring semester
- Review the events of the past semester with your student
- Evaluate the need and/or benefits of a part-time job
As always feel free to contact via email at parents@memphis.edu or via phone at 901.678.2115.

Registrar
Spring 2013 Registration
Spring registration has been open for all degree-seeking students since November 19.
Refer to the Spring Dates and Deadlines calendar for important information.
The last day of regular registration is January 16. Students who register after this
date will be subject to late registration and late payment fees.
Please remind your students that they must be advised before they can register; the
registration system will not allow a degree-seeking student to register if he or she
has not been cleared by an advisor.
Encourage your students to print and review their class schedules before their first
day of classes. Building and room assignments are sometimes changed at the last minute.
Also, some students mistakenly sign up for course sections not realizing that they
are being offered at remote locations (Millington, Collierville, Lambuth, etc.) rather
than the main campus. Let's make sure that everyone is where he or she is supposed
to be.

It is time to RENEW your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on-line at http://www.fafsa.gov for the Aid Year 2013-2014!! The application is for the Fall 2013, Spring 2014, and
Summer 2014 semesters. The University of Memphis' federal school code is 003509.
Complete the FAFSA early! Our PRIORITY DEADLINE is February 1. Don't lose out on limited federal campus-based dollars and state aid, including
the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation (TSAC) Award, as awards will be made on a first-come, first-serve basis until funds are
depleted.
Be aware that completion of the FAFSA is required for students receiving the Tennessee HOPE Lottery Scholarship. HOPE recipients are encouraged to complete the FAFSA by February 1, but no later than September 1 to still meet lottery requirements.
While the application will require income tax information for the 2012 tax year, you
can estimate your income to meet the priority deadline. Two weeks after you electronically
file your income tax return, you can go back to your FAFSA and utilize the Data Retrieval Tool that will directly transfer your income information

practical application to what is learned in the classroom, and network with peers,
faculty, staff, and community members. A great way for your student to connect with
over 50 of these organizations is the Join in January RSO Fair! It will be held Wednesday,

Health Services
This year influenza (the FLU) has begun with an early and intense onset. The tracking
map from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows nearly epidemic sickness
in 41 states. http://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/usmap.htm.
With students coming back to campus next week from across the US and the world, it
will be important to make sure they have gotten a flu shot. The immunization takes
about 10 days for immunity to develop in a person, so the sooner someone is immunized,
the better. Therefore, the University of Memphis Student Health Services is highly
recommending:
- All students get a flu shot AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, if they did not get one during Fall
2012.
- Flu shots are available at:
- Your primary care provider's office
- Many clinics and pharmacies
- Your Health Department. Shelby County Health Department is offering FREE flu shots
at their clinic locations. Click here to see our blog for further information and clinic locations
- ON CAMPUS, Tuesday, January 22, 10 am – 1 pm in the UC Poplar Room (308). The cost is $20, payable by cash, credit card, or check to Methodist Le Bonheur.
Be sure to wear clothes with easy access to your upper arm.
REMEMBER:
- WASH YOUR HANDS with soap and water.
- COVER YOUR COUGH with your elbow.
- STAY AWAY FROM CROWDS when influenza is present.
