as a new beginning, a time to improve upon the previous semester. Your student's new
freedom will also require new responsibilities, especially when it comes to managing

Study Abroad Fair. The Study Abroad Fair will be Wednesday, January 29th from 10am to 2pm in the University
Center Ballroom. Students will hear from past program participants, can ask faculty
questions about particular destinations, learn about financial aid and scholarship
opportunities, and win one of three $1,000 scholarships toward a U of M study abroad
trip! Additionally, those interested in other scholarships should click here for more information and upcoming workshops.
Parent Survey. In June 2013 we completed our annual Parent and Family Survey. We were very excited
to hear from all of you about our programs and services and how we might be able to
improve. We have put together a brief summary. Please click here to view the summary.
Now is the time to RENEW your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on-line
at http://www.fafsa.gov for the 2014-2015 Aid Year. The application is for the Fall 2014, Spring 2015, and
Summer 2015 semesters. The University of Memphis' federal school code is 003509.
Complete the FAFSA early. Our PRIORITY DEADLINE is March 1. Don't lose out on limited federal campus-based dollars and state aid, including the
Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation (TSAC) Award.
Be aware that completion of the FAFSA is required for students receiving the Tennessee
HOPE Lottery Scholarship. HOPE recipients are encouraged to complete the FAFSA by
March 1, but no later than September 1 to meet lottery requirements for HOPE Scholarship
While the application will require income tax information for the 2013 tax year, you
can estimate your income to meet the priority deadline. Once you electronically file
your income tax return, you can go back to your FAFSA and utilize the Data Retrieval
Tool that will directly transfer your income information from the IRS database on
to your FAFSA.
The Spring 2014 Fee Payment Deadline for classes is January 15, 2014 at 5:30 pm. Registration of classes will be deleted if students have not satisfied fee payment
requirements. The Late Registration Fee Payment Deadline for Spring 2014 classes is January 23,
2013 at 5:30 p.m. Registration of classes will be deleted if students have not satisfied
fee payment requirements including late fees by this deadline.
Students remain responsible for payment of fees by the fee payment deadline, even
if they did not receive or open their eBill. They also remain responsible for payment
of fees if their financial aid, scholarship, and/or sponsorship are not in place by
the fee payment deadline. Please note that unless financial aid, scholarship, and/or
sponsorship covers 100% of enrollment fees, students MUST pay in full or sign up for
the Installment Payment Plan (IPP) on TigerXpress.
Excess financial aid/scholarships will be disbursed as follows:
- eRefunds (direct deposit) beginning: January 15, 2014
- Checks mailed beginning: January 24, 2014

1098T Tuition Statement Tax Form Information
The University of Memphis, in conjunction with ECSI, is scheduled to send 1098T tax
forms by the end of January 2014 for use in filing 2013 taxes. In order to expedite
the process and get the information to the students as quickly as possible, we are
asking for their consent to receive notification of the 1098T tax form electronically.
Please encourage your student to give their consent to receive notification electronically
by following the instructions in the link below by January 9, 2014. If they would like to receive a paper copy of their 1098T form, they do not need
to do anything.
The benefits of receiving electronic notification are:
- Online delivery provides access to the form 1098T earlier than the traditional mailing
process. Your student may be able to file their tax return earlier!
- Online delivery eliminates the chance that the 1098T will get lost, misdirected or
delayed during delivery, or misplaced once the student receives it.
- Signing up for online delivery is easy and secure.
- Students can receive their 1098T form even while traveling or on assignment away from
their home address.

email address (Parents' email may also be included in the alternate email space.)

Spring registration has been open for all degree-seeking students since November 18.
Please refer to the Spring Dates and Deadlines calendar for important information.
The last day of regular registration is January 15. Students who register after this
date will be subject to late registration and late payment fees.
Please remind your students that they must be advised before they can register; the
registration system will not allow a degree-seeking student to register if he or she
has not been cleared by an advisor.
Encourage your students to print and review their class schedules before their first
day of classes. Building and room assignments are sometimes changed at the last minute.
Also, some students mistakenly sign up for course sections not realizing that they
are being offered at remote locations (Millington, Collierville, Lambuth, etc.) rather
than the main campus. Let's make sure that everyone is where he or she is supposed
Spring 2014 Check-In Dates: Tuesday, January 14 and Wednesday, January 15, 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm
All assigned rooms must be claimed by 4:30 PM on Wednesday, January 15, 2014. Residents
failing to properly check into their rooms by the above stated deadline will forfeit
their room assignment and their $200 rent prepayment. In order to prevent the room
and rent prepayment from being forfeited, the student must contact the Residence Life
and Dining Services Office, 011 Richardson Towers, 901-678-2295 and request to be
placed on the Late Arrival's List if the student will be late checking into the room.

Meal Plan Information
Meal plan cancellations for the spring semester must be made by January 14, 2014 and
any changes to the meal plans must be made by January 24, 2014.
Residents who have a meal plan and would like their $300 Dining Dollars applied to
the cost of their meal plans, may request this by going to the Campus Card Website.
Tutoring @ ESP
Tutoring@ESP sends a Thank You to all parents, friends, and family members of returning
and new University of Memphis students in 2014!
Spring semester is the perfect time for each of us to reflect on what went well during
last semester and look forward to becoming better at what we do this semester. An
attitude of "This semester, I will..." gives students direction with newly discovered
purposes for what they accomplish both in-class and out-of-class. Tutoring@ESP wants
to be included in the 'small changes' students incorporate into their routines. ESP
Tutors have taken the courses at the university and are available to assist students
from the beginning of the semester--starting January 22.
Students can determine early in the course what is required of them to be successful.
With the assistance of an ESP tutor who has already experienced the ups and downs
of courses, students can be encouraged to learn to enjoy the academic successes of
the college experience. ESP weekly seminars cover topics that are time-sensitive,
including reading strategies, note taking techniques, writing papers the professor
will want to read, as well as predicting how they will be tested in each course.
Tutoring@ESP has ten learning center locations (including evening hours at residence halls) where students can study, work with
tutors, and meet other students who share their goal of greater academic achievements!

January RSO Fair, Wednesday, January 22, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm, Rose Theatre Lobby
Do you have a student who still doesn't feel connected to the University? A student
who has not yet gotten involved? It's not too late! On Wednesday, January 22, over
50 student organizations will be at the Join in January RSO Fair to help get students
connected to their organizations.
Students who are involved in at least one thing outside the classroom are more likely
to have better grades and more likely to graduate than those who are not involved.
Involvement also allows students to develop skills and apply their classroom learning
to real-life situations, which can help them be more marketable in the job-world after
graduation. Please pass along this information and encourage your student(s) to get
Alternative Spring Break Applications
The University of Memphis Alternative Spring Break (ASB) program seeks to provide
students with an opportunity to grow personally through education, direct service
and new experiences in order to facilitate change in our personal perspectives, relationships,
and environments; and to create life-long links between students and service.
This year, there will be two ASB opportunities:
ASB Destination: Tour de Service--Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, March 9-15
ASB Destination will take participants on a "tour of service" through three states
to serve the communities of Greenville, MS; Shreveport, LA; and Little Rock, AR. Students
learn about other areas of the country while serving others. Program Fee: $75 (helps
to cover transportation, lodging, meals, supplies, etc.)
ASB Staycation: Memphis, TN, March 10-14
ASB Staycation is an experience in serving your own community, while experiencing
some of the sights, sounds, and tastes of the Mid-South you may never have experienced
before (even if you're from here!) Staycation is great for those who cannot leave
Memphis during spring break or those who want to experience our community in a way
they never have. Staycation is free to participants.
The University of Memphis Alternative Spring Break is a drug- and alcohol-free program.
Applications will be available January 16 at www.memphis.edu/service/asb or in the Student Leadership & Involvement Office (UC 211). Applications are due
Wednesday, February 5, 2014 by 4:30 pm in UC 211.
Leadership Development Opportunities
Do you want your student to get involved on campus but don't know where to tell him
or her to start? Would you like your student to develop skills outside of the classroom
that will be beneficial for years to come? The Student Leadership and Involvement Office has two upcoming programs that will provide your student with these opportunities:
Tiger Leadership Institute and Professional Connections
Tiger Leadership Institute is an 8-week training program for future leaders on campus. TLI covers a broad spectrum
of topics that prepares students for future experiences both on and off campus. There
are three levels within the Tiger Leadership Institute that engage students at different
points in their college experience. We are looking for interested students to join
Tiger Leadership Institute this semester so please encourage your student to apply! The application deadline

The Professional Connections Program joins a select group of highly motivated students with community leaders, who serve
to provide advice for personal, professional, and leadership development. The program
meets three times within the spring semester which is perfect for any student, especially
those who are already balancing many obligations. Professional Connections is an excellent way to help your student learn how to engage with Memphis professionals
and build their personal brand. The application deadline is Wednesday, February 19th.

TigerXpress – Adding an Authorized User
TigerXpress accounts, which allow students to pay and view eBills, are a common topic
at the umTech Helpdesk at this time of year. Students can sign up to give others the
ability to access their account information in the TigerXpress system.
FERPA does not allow students' records to be shared with a third party, without their
written consent. Adding an authorized user to a TigerXpress account is their written
consent that an individual may view their account information and make payments on

Memphis Baseball Continues Success in Classroom. For a ninth-straight semester, the University of Memphis baseball team has posted
a composite grade-point average above 3.0, head coach Daron Schoenrock said Friday.
Four Former Memphis Athletes to be Inducted Into M Club Hall of Fame in January. The University of Memphis athletic department will induct four former student-athletes
into the M Club Hall of Fame on Saturday evening, January 25, in ceremonies to be
held at the Holiday Inn-University of Memphis. In addition, six individuals will be
honored for their contributions to Tigers athletics.
The 2014 Hall of Fame class includes former Tiger and NFL football star Ken Irvin,
Tigers women's basketball All-American and WNBA great Tamika Whitmore, tennis standout
and current Memphis women's tennis head coach Lee Taylor Walker and Tigers softball
