The State of Tennessee Senate Education Committee has passed a bill requiring that all new incoming students who will live in on-campus housing shall be required to produce proof of immunization against meningococcal disease.

Meningococcal meningitis is a rare but serious infection. It causes inflammation of the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord. Each year, approximately 1,000 people in the U.S. get meningococcal disease, which includes meningitis and septicemia (blood infection).
