This time of year, students begin experiencing exciting and challenging situations that they need to learn to handle on their own. As a parent, try to avoid rushing in; instead, think of the college experience as your student's job. Offer support, answer questions and point them toward the right resources. Message to Parents A component of the educational program at the University of Memphis that particularly meshes with my own approach is the applied or real-time opportunities available to students. For example, at the C.H. Nash Museum at Chucalissa, each semester we host several undergraduate and graduate student interns who receive training and participate in real-time projects. My goal is for each intern to have a responsibility in the creation of a final product. I enjoy watching students take on challenges at Chucalissa where they move from hesitancy and doubt in their own abilities to group problem solving and creating a solution. I routinely note to Chucalissa visitors, that for the most part, students created everything they see during their visit that is new and innovative at our Museum. In this way, our Museum functions as a research laboratory for University of Memphis students. I firmly believe in this applied approach and am proud to work at an institution that shares this commitment. Perhaps my greatest satisfaction is working with students who as undergraduates are uncertain of their career direction but by the time they graduate, because of applied experiences such as internships, have a more clear direction for their future careers. As a graduate student, Mallory's interests are cultural heritage and community service learning. Her work at the museum has included community engagement, exhibit creation and volunteer recruitment. Currently, she is working on her Masters Practicum research with an AmeriCorps NCCC team that is being hosted by the C.H. Nash Museum. Join us for Brunch! The Memphis State Eight, who integrated the University in 1959, were honored with a historical marker on campus as part of the University of Memphis' Centennial Celebration. The Fall 2012 commencement will be held on Sunday, December 16, 2012 at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. For further details, visit the Commencement website. Campus Card Office. Students can manage their Campus (ID) Card online 24/7 at www.memphis.edu/campuscard.If their card is misplaced, lost or stolen, they need to immediately log in to deactivate their card to prevent unauthorized use.If they find their misplaced card, log in to activate it. View card balance(s) and meal plan balances (if applicable). Students can also add additional funds to their card using a credit card. U of M Graduates earning more. Graduates in health fields at the University of Memphis (with average starting salary of $59,570) earn more than graduates in any major in any public college in Tennessee and nearly $5,000 more than graduates in the same programs at Middle Tennessee State University. Summer Incompletes: Please remind your student that any undergraduate student who received an I grade (Incomplete) in a Summer 2012 course has until September 26 to satisfy the instructor’s course requirements. If the work is not completed by this date, the “I” will be changed to “F.” Fall Break: October 13-16, is the next major registration calendar event. Shortly after the break, Spring class offerings will be available on myMemphis and the Spring Dates and Deadlines calendar will be available on the Registrar’s website. When the break arrives, you may want to ask your student questions such as, “What do you think you will take next term?” and “Have you made an advising appointment?” Spring 2013 registration opens November 12. For students who enrolled in the installment payment plan for Fall 2012 term, the first installment is due by October 1, 2012. A $25 late payment fee will be assessed for both tuition and housing (if included in the plan), if payment is not received by the University on or before the due date. The second and final installment is due November 1, 2012. Fees can be paid by credit card or eCheck online on TigerXpress. If you are an authorized user, you can access your student’s account to view/pay fees through the authorized user log in. Upcoming deadlines/key dates:

Financial Aid OfficePlease have your student continue to monitor their myMemphis account for updates throughout the semester. There are several new rules affecting Federal aid for the 2012-13 aid year. Check out the “What’s New For 2012-13” box on our website for more details. IMPORTANT!! Remind your student that all aid, including scholarships, is determined by enrollment. If they are considering dropping a class they should always check with our office first to see how it may affect their current, or future, eligibility. Spring 2013 Cancellation Deadline Fall contracts are for both the fall and spring semesters. Students who are not returning for the Spring 2013 Semester must cancel in writing by November 1 in order to not be responsible for the $200 Spring rent prepayment. Residents who cancel after November 1 will be responsible for the $200 Spring rent prepayment. ALL CANCELLATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED IN WRITING TO THE RESIDENCE LIFE AND DINING SERVICES OFFICE, 011 RICHARDSON TOWERS. Fall 2012 Closing The University of Memphis residence halls will close for the Semester Break on Friday, December 14, 2012, at 3 PM. All residents are required to leave the residence halls 24 hours after their final exam, unless they are involved in Commencement Exercises. Residents of Carpenter Complex and the Living Learning Complex do not have to vacate their rooms during the Semester Break unless their Spring 2013 room assignment has been canceled. Residents required to vacate their rooms during Semester Break will not be allowed to remain or be readmitted to the buildings during the Semester Break. The residence hall staff will not be available to permit reentry into the buildings after closing. Residents of Richardson Towers, Rawls, Smith, South, and Mynders are required to sign up for an appointment to check out and surrender their room keys to their resident advisors before they leave. Residents of the Living Learning Complex and Carpenter Complex should sign up for a room inspection. Students who are not returning to the residence halls in the Spring must officially check out of the room no later than 3 PM on December 14 and cancel in writing with the Residence Life and Dining Services Office in 011 Richardson Towers. Students who are returning for the Spring are not required to remove their belongings from their rooms during the break; however, they should take all valuables and possessions needed during this time period. The buildings will reopen at 1 PM on January 15, 2013. The $200 Spring Semester rental prepayment must be paid by December 1, 2012. The remainder of the Spring 2013 rent must be paid by January 15, 2013, for the 2013 Spring Semester. Payments may be paid in advance by mail to The University of Memphis, Bursar’s Office, P. O. Box 1000, Department 313, Memphis, TN 38148-0313 or may be paid in person in 115 Wilder Tower or online at bf.memphis.edu/ebursar. If a resident is receiving financial aid or is unable to make payment in full, the resident may be placed on an installment plan. There is an additional charge of $40.00 added to your account if you are placed on the installment plan. If you are receiving financial aid or scholarships for the Spring 2013 Semester, all aid will be applied toward any debts owed the University, such as rent. Spring 2013 Check-In Dates Tuesday, January 15 and Wednesday, January 16, 1 PM – 4:30 PM All assigned rooms must be claimed by 4:30 PM on Wednesday, January 16, 2013. Residents failing to properly check into their rooms by the above stated deadline will forfeit their room assignment and their $200 rent prepayment. In order to prevent the room and rent prepayment from being forfeited, the student must contact the Residence Life and Dining Services Office, 011 Richardson Towers, 901-678-2295 and request to be placed on the Late Arrival’s List if the student will be late checking into the room. Memphis Tigers Partner with Memphis City Schools to Collect 10,000 Books on September 1st. The Memphis Tigers PAWS (Preparing Athletes for Winning Success) program announced a goal to collect 10,000 books at the Tigers' first football game on Sept. 1. The campaign has been termed "10,000 Books from Tiger Fans." All books collected will be donated to seven Memphis City Schools deemed "Innovation Zone" schools. Dr. Robert Connolly currently serves as the 
Mallory Bader is the daughter of Romney Grandi and Robert Bader. She was born and
raised in Memphis, TN. After attending undergraduate at Hendrix College in Conway,
AR, she worked for the Arkansas Archaeological Survey. Mallory moved home in August
2011 to further her education at the University of Memphis where she is working on
her September 2012
