UMparent E-news: September Edition

This time of year, students begin experiencing exciting and challenging situations that they need to learn to handle on their own.  As a parent, try to avoid rushing in; instead, think of the college experience as your student's job. Offer support, answer questions and point them toward the right resources.  Parents should use the opportunity to help their student become more independent.

What Parents Can Do...

  • Encourage your student to ask for help when needed.
  • With mid-terms approaching, make sure your student sets time aside to study. Remind your student about free tutoring services offered by the U of M's Educational Support Program.
  • Students who consider dropping classes should remember their financial aid status, scholarship status (including HOPE), and the ability to stay on their parents' health insurance, may be affected.
  • Remind your student to see his or her advisor before spring registration which will begin November 12.

Administrator Spotlight: Dr. Robert Connolly

Robert ConnollyDr. Robert Connolly currently serves as the Director of the C.H. Nash Museum at Chucalissa, is a member of the Advisory Board of the Museum Studies Graduate Certificate Program, and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology.  After spending his early adult life in travel and service, in his mid-30s he began a 10-year period of college studies ultimately earning a PhD degree in Anthropology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.   Public engagement in cultural heritage institutions and service organizations is a keen interest for Dr. Connolly.  He currently serves as the Chair of the Public Education Committee of the Society for American Archeology where he leads national initiatives on outreach and engagement. Through his commitment to community service learning he serves as the University of Memphis representative to Tennessee Campus Compact.  Dr. Connolly has written and published extensively on public participation and engagement in cultural heritage institutions.

Message to Parents

A component of the educational program at the University of Memphis that particularly meshes with my own approach is the applied or real-time opportunities available to students.  For example, at the C.H. Nash Museum at Chucalissa, each semester we host several undergraduate and graduate student interns who receive training and participate in real-time projects.  My goal is for each intern to have a responsibility in the creation of a final product.  I enjoy watching students take on challenges at Chucalissa where they move from hesitancy and doubt in their own abilities to group problem solving and creating a solution.  I routinely note to Chucalissa visitors, that for the most part, students created everything they see during their visit that is new and innovative at our Museum.  In this way, our Museum functions as a research laboratory for University of Memphis students.  I firmly believe in this applied approach and am proud to work at an institution that shares this commitment.  Perhaps my greatest satisfaction is working with students who as undergraduates are uncertain of their career direction but by the time they graduate, because of applied experiences such as internships, have a more clear direction for their future careers.
