The Family and Consumer Sciences Program is accredited by the American Association
of Family and Consumer Sciences. The concentrations are designed to prepare students
to demonstrate:

an ability to perform as a leader in a variety of community settings, businesses,
agencies and schools;

an understanding of the integrative approach to the relationships among individuals,
families, communities and the environments in which they function;

professional expertise in fashion merchandising, home furnishings merchandising, or
family and consumer studies;

the critical thinking, problem solving, and technological skills essential to work
effectively with a specific group of clients, consumers, or students; and
-
an understanding and appreciation of diversity and multicultural/global perspective
as a leader in an urban environment.
Specialty areas in the Family and Consumer Sciences program allow students to develop
skills in one of the following areas: Family and Consumer Studies, Fashion Merchandising,
and Home Furnishings Merchandising. Each specialty area requires an internship in
an approved community setting.
