Master of Arts in Teaching Secondary Education

The Department of Instruction and Curriculum Leadership (ICL) offers the Master of the Arts in Teaching with a concentration in Secondary Education which leads to initial certification in Secondary Education, grades 7-12. This Master of Arts in Education Secondary Education certification prepares students to educate adolescents in a group setting while including other areas of coursework including adolescent development, learning theory, social foundations of education and teaching methods.

This Master of Arts in Teaching program requires field hours and prepares students to meet the competencies for Tennessee licensure. Graduates of the Master in the Arts of Teaching Secondary (MAT) Secondary Education program are positioned to pursue roles in secondary educational settings in Tennessee such as middle schools, junior high schools, high schools and others.
