Daniel Armitage, assistant vice president for Student Affairs and Dr. Jeanine Ward-Roof, dean of students at Florida State University, presented "Social Media and Freedom of Speech — Where Does the Concept of Civility and Character Fit?" at the Dalton Institute on College Student Values on Jan. 31.

Arts and Sciences

Dr. Gene A. Plunka, professor of English, published "Staging the Banality of Evil: Donald Freed's The White Crow: Eichmann in Jerusalem, Cecil Taylor's Good, and Peter Barnes's Laughter!" in the Journal of Dramatic Theory and Criticism.

Fogelman College of Business & Economics

Dr. J. David Spiceland, professor of accountancy, published a global edition of his textbook Intermediate Accounting (seventh edition, McGraw-Hill). Spiceland is the lead author with co-authors Dr. James and Dr. Mark Nelson. The text already has been published in Canadian and Chinese editions. It focuses on the emerging international financial reporting standards rather than U.S. standards. Spiceland's other textbook, Financial Accounting, is in its second edition.

Herff College of Engineering

Dr. Ernö Lindner, professor of biomedical engineering, presented the invited lecture "Towards Feedback Controlled Anesthesia: Automated Flow Analytical System for Monitoring Propofol in Serum" at the Pittcon 2013 conference in mid-March. He also presented the invited lecture "Optical and Electrochemical Sensors for the Analysis and Monitoring of Small Sample Volumes" at the University of Minnesota's Department of Chemistry March 7.

Libraries

Dr. Mark H. Danley, associate professor and catalog librarian, co-edited and contributed a chapter to The Seven Years' War: Global Views (Brill, 2012). The book reaches beyond traditional approaches to illuminate the conflict as world war and includes aspects of the Seven Years' War beyond the usual emphasis on Frederick the Great's campaigns and the war in North America.  Danley's work was supported by a University of Memphis Faculty Research Grant in 2006-2007, as well as by grants from the Lewis Walpole Library of Yale University and from the Society of the Cincinnati Library, Washington, D.C.

Edwin G. Frank, assistant professor and curator of Special Collections, was invited by the Chickasaw Bluff chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution to speak about the University Libraries' rare holdings. Frank's presentation highlighted the historical significance of 19th-century maps of Tennessee and Memphis, a World War II POW newspaper and L'Idolatrie Huguenotre, a 17th-century volume bound in human skin.

Loewenberg School of Nursing

Dr. Annapoorna Mary, assistant professor, published "Impact of Age, Gender and Comorbidities in Cardiopulmonary Indicators and Dysfunctional Ventilator Weaning Response after CABG" in International Journal of Current Research.
