September 2011

Sept. 30 gala to launch year of celebration; many other events planned
Join the celebration of the University's first 100 years, starting with a kick-off extravaganza featuring Aaron Neville.

Oct. 5 book signing, photo exhibit may include "famous" guest
Don’t be surprised if a shadowy figure shows up at a book-signing session and photo exhibit Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. in Mynders Hall. The ghost of Elizabeth Mynders has a way of appearing at unexpected times in the dormitory that was built in the shape of an "E" to honor her.

Law School announces five additions
The University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law is proud to announce the addition of two full-time and three visiting faculty members beginning in the fall 2011 semester.

Boyd provides unmatched service en route to "distinguished" honor
Many campus runarounds end at the desk of Brigitte Boyd. If she isn’t the right person to answer someone’s question, she will look up the correct person, provide his or her number to the caller and then transfer the call.

Co-workers have "wow" attitude when it comes to Lamar’s work
Janis Lamar won a 2011 University of Memphis Distinguished Employee of the Year Award during Employee Recognition Day in June for her hard work as an administrative secretary in the Department of Econonics. She could be equally lauded for what she does after work.

Administrator of the Year has "law" on her side
Melanie Stovall Murry was content to stay out of the spotlight earlier this year as a team of law students from the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law won the prestigious Thurgood Marshall Mock Trial national championship.

Shupe selected as first recipient of Harriet Montgomery Award
The soft, reassuring tone of Kristin Shupe’s voice calms the apprehensions of students and the concerns of parents as she explains how the U of M Department of Theatre & Dance is the perfect place for students "bubbling over with energy and delight in what they do."

Todd "shines in the eyes of others"
Inez Todd didn’t stand up when her named was called. It wasn’t until it was a said a second time that she realized she’d won.

Central Avenue Project Completion Delayed until 2012
Construction delays may occur along Central Avenue between Zach Curlin and Patterson throughout this academic year due to a delay in the Central Avenue Safety Project that has pushed back its completion until next year.
