CFA Institute Investment Research Challenge
Finance students from the University of Memphis have competed in the CFA Institute
“Investment Research Challenge” for the past several years. For the Investment Research
Challenge, a team of three to five students researches a public company, prepares
an equity research report similar to a securities analyst’s report to initiate coverage
of a company, and then presents their findings to a panel of industry professionals,
most of which are Chartered Financial Analysts. This competition provides students
with access to multiple networking and mentorship opportunities. The University of
Memphis team won the Mid-South division of the competition in 2011, and placed within
the top four in 2012 and 2013.
TVA Student Managed Portfolio
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has partnered with the University of Memphis
to provide a real-world learning experience in portfolio management to University
of Memphis students enrolled in either FIR 4331 or FIR 6331. FIR 4331 and 6331 provide
enrolled students with hands-on experience in managing a real stock portfolio. Students
actively manage TVA funds by designing investment strategies, calling in trades, and
providing performance reports to the TVA. The student-run stock portfolio is under
the guidance of a Fogelman faculty member (Currently: Dr. Steven Jordan - PhD Yale
University). Students learn how to manage real money and develop real skills useful
for making stock investment decisions, either for their own investment portfolio or
for potential career opportunities in the mutual or hedge fund industries. Student
managers of the TVA student managed fund are held to similar guidelines as TVA’s professional
money managers. This class is unlike any other class offered at the University of
Memphis. Enrolling in FIR 4331 or FIR 6331 places students on the board of directors of the
University of Memphis' TVA student managed mutual fund.
Lambda Alpha – Real Estate Fraternity
Lambda Alpha Real Estate Student Organization is sponsored by Lambda Alpha International
(LAI), an honorary society for the advancement of land economics. LAI provides a forum
for the study and advancement of land economics where the "winnowing and sifting"
of ideas takes place in an atmosphere of mutual respect. The student organization
is not limited to Real Estate majors or those in the Fogelman College of Business
and Economics. We encourage those interested in the field of Real Estate to join us
in several meetings each semester to hear speakers from the Real Estate profession
and learn about career opportunities in Real Estate. Internship opportunities will
also be explored.
