International Student Admissions Requirements

The University of Memphis welcomes students from across the world. We provide students a first-class education complete with opportunities for research, internships, and an engaging student life community. The university is located in Memphis, TN, one of America’s most diverse and progressive metropolitan cities.

  1. All students, both freshmen and transfer, must apply online for admission as an undergraduate student.
    • Freshman admission is competitive and based upon a comprehensive review of the student’s academic record. This includes the high school grade point average and TOEFL or IELTS scores, if appropriate.
    • Transfer admission is competitive and based upon the cumulative grade point average of all previously attended colleges/universities, and must be at least a 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale for consideration.
  2. Pay the non-refundable undergraduate application fee of $50
  3. All international applicants must complete the Affidavit of Support Form which can be downloaded from our website at http://www.memphis.edu/admissions/pdfs/affidavit.pdf.
  4. All international transfer applicants must have their international documents evaluated by a US credentialing agency that holds membership with the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services. Please access the website at www.naces.org.  Once there click on How to Find a Member.  Any of the agencies found on this website can be used to do the evaluation, however the University of Memphis encourages SpanTran.
    • Transfer applicants should request the agency to do a Course-by Course evaluation.
    • Freshman applicants should request a Document by Document or General Evaluation with a GPA calculation.
  5. A TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE exam is required of all international students who are from countries where English is not their first language.  A score of 61 on the internet based TOEFL, or 500 on the paper/pencil test is acceptable. The minimum requirement for the IELTS exam is a score of 6, and the minimum score for the PTE is 50.
  6. All international students must submit a certification of finances document, which establishes the ability to pay for school and support the student while studying at the University.
  7. Health records must be provided within 30 days of the first day of classes showing freedom from Tuberculosis. (NOTE: All international students must purchase a health insurance policy or provide proof of government sponsored health insurance before they will be allowed to enroll.)
