“Hip Hop & Music” with

The main focus of the experience will be to prioritize the interpretation of hip-hop/rap lyrics (lyricism) and the ways it speaks to the youth. An exploration on how hip-hop brings to the light topics such as oppression, violence, identity, culture, power, and activism toward social justice will also serve as a foundational component within the experience. Dr. Hunter is a community voice in the series voices to expose the boys to local community experts, etc.

When it comes to civil rights, it’s important not only to learn about historical milestones but also to interpret them in a way that can be applied to today’s challenges. Through multi-sensory and multi-media innovations, historical artifacts and structures, events, the National Civil Rights Museum champions educational programming and offers visitors a full immersion experience. Parents are welcome to attend but must pay own admission fee.

Memphis has a deep history with music, including the Memphis Symphony Orchestra (MSO). We are the largest performing arts institution in the Memphis region, and the orchestra for a myriad of other arts organizations, including Opera Memphis and Ballet Memphis. The experience will feature African-American pianist and UofM professor, Artina McCain.

The Department of Theatre & Dance mission is to educate the next generation of theatre artists for successful careers in the performing arts, the entertainment industry and arts education. This experience will begin with a tour that includes a hands-on technical theatre experience then moving to the dance studio to watch a performance and participate in a short dance class.

The closing of an academic school year is a time of reflection and celebration. As students prepare to enter High School, participants will be tasked with setting goals that will contribute to success.
