Alumni Spotlight: David Perdue

David Perdue received a B.B.A. from Memphis State University in 1963. He began his telecom career in 1969 when the Carterphone decision by the FCC opened up the telecom network to competition.  In 1972, he started his first company Telecommunication Systems of America (TSA), which was purchased by Northern Telecom (Nortel) in 1976.  He served as President of Nortel's Systems Division and was promoted to Group VP for Strategic Planning.  In 1979 he started his second company, ATS Telephone & Data Systems, which grew to be the largest privately-held interconnect company in the United States. ATS was purchased by a forerunner to AVAYA nineteen years later.  Along the way, David started one of the first cellular companies later acquired by BellSouth, as well as one of the earlier competitive long distance companies.
