Alumni Association Spotlight: Kevin Dean
(BA '02)

Kevin Dean (BA ’02), executive director at Literacy Mid-South, transferred to the University of Memphis after a year at Auburn University. “I was born and raised in Memphis and wanted to try something new,” Dean says. “I quickly realized that Auburn wasn’t for me.” Back in Memphis, Dean pursued a degree in communication, with an emphasis in broadcasting and electronic media. Unsure about his initial career plans—television producer/filmmaker—upon graduation, Dean used his creative ambition in a different way.

He joined AmeriCorps, which placed him with Volunteer Memphis where he eventually became community services director. He was Director of Development at Hope House before taking the position at Literacy Mid-South last May.

Although he is not working behind the camera, Dean says that what he’s learned at the U of M has served him well. “I have to work with the media all the time and I have to communicate to different audiences on a daily basis. It definitely helps to have a communication and media background.”

Dean was recently named one of Memphis’ Top 40 Under 40 by the Memphis Business Journal.
