Nurturing multiculturalism.

Welcome to the Confucius Institute at the University of Memphis (CIUM), home to the Asian Studies and International Trade (ASIT) degree program. Founded in 2007, CIUM was the first Confucius institute in Tennessee, and has been committed to providing multicultural experiences. CIUM serves as a platform to bridge the understanding of Chinese culture with University of Memphis, Memphis and Shelby County, and West Tennessee. You can benefit the learning of Chinese language and culture programs, study-abroad opportunities and scholarship, and pursuing the ASIT undergraduate degree.

CIUM has been recognized as one of the best Confucius Institutes of the Year in 2011 and 2013 by the CI Headquarters (HANBAN). We owe that distinction to our extraordinary teachers and talented staff. Dr. Hsiang-te Kung, is a 75th direct descendant of Confucius and a tenured professor at the University of Memphis, serving as the current director of the Institute.

The mission of the CIUM is to build a bridge between the Mid-South region and China and East Asia, providing additional opportunities and resources to teach, promote, and provide Chinese language and cultural programs and classes as well as programs related to China and East Asia.
