CRIS Aquatics is proud to offer American Red Cross swim lesson programs. Our swim lessons offer a supportive, nurturing environment in which participants ages six months to adult can learn to swim or improve their existing skills. We offer lessons for beginners to experienced swimmers. Our swim lesson program runs year round and we offer group, private, and semi-private lessons.

Tuesday and Thursday evenings: Eight Lessons

  • Preschool: 4-5 years-30 minutes, 5:50- 6:20 pm
  • Youth Beginners I/ II: 6-12 years-40 minutes, 6:30-7:10 pm
  • Youth/Teen Intermediate: 6-18 years-40 minutes, 6:30-7:10 pm
  • Adult Beginners: 13 years & up-40 minutes, 7:20-8 pm

  • Parent/child: 6 months-3 years-30 minutes, 10:15-10:45 am
  • Preschool: 4-5 years-30 minutes, 10:15-10:45 am
  • Youth Beginners I/II: 6-12 years-40 minutes, 11-11:40 am
  • Youth/Teen Intermediate: 6-18 years-40 minutes, 11:50 am-12:30 pm
  • Adult Beginners: 13 years & up-40 minutes, 11:50 am-12:30 pm

Class Descriptions

  • Parent/Child:Ages six months - three years | 30-minute lessons. Teaches water safety and water adaptation through songs and games for children and their parents. Parents will become confident handling their babies in the water while teaching water movement skills (10 pairs per instructor).

  • Preschool: Ages four - five years | 30-minute lessons. Divided into two levels for Beginners (no previous water experience) and Beginners/Intermediate (comfortable in water, puts face in water and blows bubbles, can swim minimum of five feet with or without belt or assistance). (No more than six participants per instructor.)Youth Beginners I: Ages six to 12 years | 40-minute lessons. Teaches the fundamentals of swimming and consists of eight lessons. No previous water experience is required.

  • Youth Beginners II: Ages six to 12 years | 40-minutes lessons. Teaches basic water skills: floating on front and back, swimming 15 feet without assistance, gliding, and kicking.
  • Youth and Teen Intermediate: Ages six to 18 years old | 40-minute lessons. This class is designed for youth and teens ages six to 18 who meet the following skill requirements: Swims easily on stomach in deep water, breathes side to side and can swim 25 yards (one length of the pool), front crawl, and elementary backstroke. This class continues to build on the skills learned in the previous levels and works on distance and endurance, as well as stroke technique.
  • Adult and Teens: Ages 13 and Up | 40-minutes lessons. Designed to teach beginner teens/adults the fundamentals of swimming, as well as work with those who want to develop their skills.
  • Water Aerobics: Water Aerobics classes are offered throughout the year in our Leisure Pool. You do not have to be a Recreation Center member to enroll in these classes. Six-week sessions cost $69.

Private Lessons

At CRIS, we are passionate about teaching kids and adults to be strong swimmers. Our lessons are for swimmers from age four to adult and include a private one-on-one session with your very own certified instructor for extreme beginners or those who want to condition through swimming. Private lessons are for your convenience. We offer lessons any time that the building is open. Let us know what days and times fit your schedule and we will match you with an instructor that is able to work with your availability

  • Each session includes five lessons.
  • Each lesson will be 30 minutes in length.
  • Must be at least four years of age
  • Register online or at the front desk.
  • Payment must be received at the time of registration. 
  • An instructor will contact you to set up dates and times for the lessons within sevens days of registration.
  • If you have a particular time or day that you would like to have the lessons, please indicate that on the registration form.
  • You may request an instructor of your choice as long as both of your schedules are compatible. 
  • No refunds will be given after the first lesson. If participant misses a lesson without at least 3 hours prior notice or the participant is over 15 minutes late the lesson is forfeited.

Semi-Private Lessons

The University of Memphis Recreation Center offers Semi-Private (two to four students per instructor) lessons. These lessons are flexible and can be taught around your schedule. Lessons will be offered Sunday through Saturday during facility hours, depending on the availability of an instructor.

  • Each session includes five lessons.
  • Each lesson will be 30 minutes in length.
  • Participants must sign up together
  • We ask that all participants in private or semi-private swim lessons be at least four years of age or older.
  • Semi-Private lessons should be on the same skill level and close to the same age
  • Register online or at the front desk. Payment must be received at the time of registration. 
  • An instructor will contact you to set up dates and times for the lessons within seven days of registration. If you have a particular time or day that you would like to have the lessons, please indicate that on the registration form.
  • You may request an instructor of your choice as long as both of your schedules are compatible.
