Faculty ConvocationThis year's 21st annual Faculty Convocation, honoring top faculty and advisers, will be held Wednesday, April 23. This event honors outstanding faculty members by granting the following awards: Alumni Association Distinguished Research Awards, Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Awards, Alumni Association Distinguished Advising Awards, Thomas W. Briggs Foundation Excellence in Teaching Awards, Allen J. Hammond Presidential Service Award and the Willard R. Sparks Eminent Faculty Award.

Faculty Convocation will take place at 2pm in the Rose Theatre. Faculty members, dressed in full academic regalia, will walk in procession to the Rose Theatre from the College of Communication and Fine Arts beginning at 1:30pm. The event is free and open to the public.

The U of M Alumni Association will present awards for Distinguished Research, Excellence in Engaged Scholarship and Creative Achievement. Recipients of the award are Stephen W. Hancock (MFA) for achievement in the Creative Arts; James E. Fickle (Ph.D.) for the Humanities; William T. Smith (Ph.D.) for Social Sciences and Business; George A. Anastassiou (Ph.D.) for the Sciences, Engineering and Math and Michael Schmidt (MGD) for Excellence in Engaged Scholarship.

Five professors will be honored with the Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Award. Receiving the award will be Lily Afshar (D.M.), professor of Music, Irvin L. Tankersley (J.D.), associate professor of Accountancy, Fernando Burgos Perez (Ph.D.) and Yuki Matsuda (Ph.D.), professor and associate professor of Foreign Languages and Literatures and Robert R. Marchini (Ph.D.), professor of Physics.

Ralph Albanese (Ph.D.) of the department of Foreign Languages and Literature, has been named the recipient of the 2008 Willard R. Sparks Eminent Faculty Award. The award recognizes exceptional and sustained contributions to scholarly-creative achievement, teaching and service as well as the bringing of recognition to the University. This year's recipients of the Distinguished Advising Awards are Lisa Eldin and Nancy Magallanes. Nancy H. Mardis (J.D.) associate professor of Accountancy and Joseph R. Hayden (Ph.D.) assistant professor of Journalism will each receive the Thomas W. Briggs Foundation Excellence in Teaching Award, which recognizes teaching excellence at the undergraduate level and overall commitment to undergraduate education. Noel Schwartz will receive one of the U of M's most prestigious honors for service to the University – the Allen J. Hammond Presidential Award. The Hammond Award is not presented every year; it is reserved for special recognition of people who have extraordinarily significant service to the University.

Faculty Convocation coincides with Faculty Scholarship Week, April 16-23, when the University of Memphis celebrates the great achievements of its faculty. Events will showcase the scope and quality of books, articles, CDs, films, art, and other work produced by faculty members.
