Join us for the 2008 Distinguished Alumni Awards, “Once in a Blue Moon,” at The Peabody in downtown Memphis on Friday, February 29 as we recognize our alumni and friends for their accomplishments. The awards gala returns to The Peabody after being held at other venues the past three years. Enjoy dinner, dancing, a live auction and more as this blue university celebrates once-in-a-lifetime achievements.

This year’s Distinguished Alumni are G. Douglas “Doug” Edwards (BBA ’74, President and CEO of Morgan Keegan), Cathy Ross (MBA ’84, Senior VP and CFO of FedEx Express) and William Sanderson (BBA ’68, JD ’71, actor, Deadwood, Gods and Generals, Blade Runner, Newhart). Larry Papasan (former president of Smith & Nephew and MLG&W) will be recognized as the Distinguished Friend of the University. Johanna Edwards (BA ’01, best-selling author and award-winning journalist) will be honored as the Outstanding Young Alumna, and Bruce Harber (BPS ’91, U of M Director of Police Services) will receive the J. The Awards Gala dinner will begin at 7:30 pm with a VIP reception beginning at 5:30 pm at the new downtown Law School Plaza. Limousine shuttle service will be provided from The Peabody. The Law Alumni Chapter will host the reception in the new plaza to celebrate this “Once in a Blue Moon” occasion, the beginning of construction at the former Customs House and Post Office. All alumni and friends of the School of Law are invited to attend.

Did you have a professor at the U of M who was an exceptional teacher? The Alumni Association and the Thomas W. Briggs Foundation are seeking nominations for awards recognizing excellence in teaching. Honorees will be recognized at the annual Faculty Convocation held at the end of the spring semester.
The Thomas W. Briggs Foundation Excellence in Teaching Award honors professors for outstanding undergraduate teaching and an overall commitment to undergraduate education. Award nominees must be full-time faculty members at the University of Memphis and must be currently teaching undergraduate courses. Tenure status is not required for nomination. Past recipients are not eligible. The nomination deadline is 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20.

U of Mís Annual Education Career Fair
The U of Mís annual Education Career Fair will be February 20, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Michael D. Rose Theatre. As many as 30 school districts seeking teachers, counselors and administrators are expected to attend. The fair is free to all alumni and U of M students who are seeking jobs, career-related information and networking opportunities. Those who attend should bring copies of their resumes and portfolios. Music Society Celebrates Jazz Week
The Music Society will celebrate Jazz Week at the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music with a wine and cheese reception on Saturday, March 1st at 6:30 p.m. prior to a performance by the Southern Comfort Jazz Orchestra with internationally acclaimed jazz saxophonist David Sanchez and his quartet. The Herff College of Engineering Awards Dinner will be held on Tuesday, March 11 at the University of Memphis Holiday Inn. This year the alumni awards will begin with a social hour at 6:00 followed by dinner at 6:30. Theopolis Holeman (BS í71, Senior Vice President of Power Delivery at Duke Energy) will be honored as the Outstanding Alumnus for 2007. The College of Arts and Sciences will host its seventh annual community event, Great Conversations. This yearís event will be Thursday, March 27, 2008 at the University of Memphis Holiday Inn. Great Conversations is a unique dinner party where alumni and community friends gather to discuss hot topics that are selected by the guest in advance. Tickets are $75 per person and $65 for U of M Alumni Association Members.
The Arts & Sciences Alumni Chapter needs your nomination for the 2008 Outstanding Alumni Award. Each year the chapter presents this award to a deserving Arts & Sciences graduate at its fall alumni awards dinner. We encourage you to nominate any graduate who demonstrates outstanding achievement in academic pursuits, research activities or community involvement. Please provide a nomination letter that addresses the nominee's professional accomplishments and the impact and influence on his or her business profession, a letter of support from one other individual unrelated to the candidate that addresses professional and/or community contribution criteria, and any additional information that would reflect on the nominee's achievements, character or contributions to the larger community.
