Join us for the 2008 Distinguished Alumni Awards , "Once in a Blue Moon," at The Peabody in downtown Memphis on Friday, February 29 . On a date that comes around only once in four years, we recognize our alumni and friends whose accomplishments are even rarer. Enjoy dinner, dancing, a live auction and more as this blue university celebrates once-in-a-lifetime achievements.
G. Douglas "Doug" Edwards (BBA '74, President and CEO of Morgan Keegan), Cathy Ross (MBA '84, Senior VP and CFO of FedEx Express) and William Sanderson (BBA '68, JD '71, actor, Deadwood, Gods and Generals, Blade Runner, Newhart) will receive Distinguished Alumni Awards. Larry Papasan (former president of Smith & Nephew and MLG&W) will be recognized as the Distinguished Friend of the University. Johanna Edwards (BA '01, best-selling author and award-winning journalist) will be honored as the Outstanding Young Alumni, and Bruce Harber (BPS '91, U of M Director of Police Services) will receive the J. Millard Smith Illustrious Service to the Association Award.
The Awards Gala will begin at 7:30 pm at the Peabody with a VIP reception beginning at 5:30 pm at the new downtown Law School Plaza. Shuttle service will be provided. For more details and reservations, call 901-678-2333.
The Distinguished Teaching Award Committee has announced its finalists. As part of the final selection process, the committee invites faculty, students and alumni to submit letters in support of the finalists. Letters may be delivered to the University Honors Program office in 204 Scates Hall or submitted electronically to Melinda Jones at email@example.com . The deadline for submitting letters is February 1 .
The following faculty members received sufficient nominations to place among the top nominees for the award: Lily Afshar, Music; John Amis, Management; Walter Brown, History; Fernando Burgos, Foreign Languages and Literatures; Ruthbeth Finerman, Anthropology; Larry Houk, Chemistry; Balaji Krishnan, Marketing and Supply Chain Management; Dennis Laumann, History; Mary Beth Mader, Philosophy; Robert Marchini, Physics; Yuki Matsuda, Foreign Languages and Literatures; Albert Okunade, Economics; Abby Parrill-Baker, Chemistry; John Ronan, English; Wanda Rushing, Sociology; Lynda Kathryn Sharp, Instruction and Curriculum Leadership; Anna Bess Sorin, Biology; and Irvin Tankersley, Accountancy. Only five faculty will receive the honor.
Funded and sponsored by the Alumni Association, the award recognizes excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Students planning to enter the U of M in fall 2008 as first-time, incoming freshmen may apply for the Alumni Association Scholarship . The award is a four-year scholarship worth $1,000/year ($500/semester). Relatives of Alumni Association members who have paid their dues within the calendar year prior to the application deadline are eligible. The scholarship program encourages family of Alumni Association members to make the U of M their first choice for higher education.

Do you know a prospective student who resides in northern Mississippi? The reception is Tuesday, February 5 , from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Students in DeSoto, Tate, Marshall and Tunica counties in Mississippi, and Crittenden County in Arkansas, may attend the U of M at in-state tuition rates provided eligibility requirements are met.
The Law Alumni Chapter and the Alumni Association will host a reception at the new Law School Plaza at 5:30 pm on Friday, February 29 , prior to the Distinguished Alumni Awards. Join the Law Chapter to celebrate this "Once in a Blue Moon" occasion, the beginning of construction at the former Customs House and Post Office, One North Front Street, in downtown Memphis. All alumni and friends of the School of Law are invited to attend. Shuttle service will be provided to and from The Peabody for those also attending the DAA event following the reception.
