In the past few issues of the Fogelman Flash and Fogelman Focus, I have espoused some of my philosophies on managing universities.  I have talked about development and execution of long-term strategies, the benefits of cooperation rather than competition and the value of meritocracy.  In this issue of the Fogelman Flash, I share some thoughts on empowerment of units and the accompanying decentralization.

Three FCBE Faculty Awarded Professorships for Exemplary Leaders
Three Professorships for Exemplary Leaders (PEL) Awards were recently distributed at a Dean’s Board Advisory meeting at River Oaks Restaurant. The PELs were funded in order to recognize three outstanding administrators for their high-level leadership and significant contributions to the College.

George Johnson

FCBE Alumnus, George Johnson, Makes Generous Donation
George Johnson, FCBE alumnus and President of BJB Administrative Services, made a significant commitment of $875,000 to the college by agreeing to support four premier excellence programs. The donation will be paid out in five equal annual installments of $175,000 to reward faculty and staff for outstanding performance and encourage the pursuit of excellence.

Dr. Shawn Jones

Shawn Jones Wins Distinguished Teaching Award
Dr. Shawn Jones, Assistant Professor in the Department of Marketing and Supply Chain Management, has been selected as a recipient of 2013’s Distinguished Teaching Award. He will receive this honor at the faculty convocation in April. This University-wide honor is only bestowed on four professors each year. The award is funded and sponsored by the University of Memphis Alumni Association.

Fogelman Business College’s Online MBA Program Ranked Among the Nation’s Best
After evaluating online MBA programs from around the country, www.businessmba.org rated the U of M’s Fogelman College of Business and Economics’ online MBA as a “Best Value” (16th out of the top 25 in the country) and www.geteducated.com called the program a “Best Buy” (24th on its list of top programs).

Bill Courtney

Against All Odds Luncheon Inspires Students
Bill Courtney, a local Memphian, entrepreneur and star of the Academy Award winning documentary Undefeated, spoke to a group of about 200 Fogelman College students at the inaugural “Against All Odds” Luncheon. The luncheon series is offered through the Avron B. Fogelman Center for Professional Development. Courtney’s enthusiasm, humor, real-world experiences and ability to “keep it real” made a dramatic impact on the audience.

Dhaliwal Recognized as a Faculty Research “Millionaire"
Dr. Jasbir Dhaliwal, FCBE Professor and Associate Dean for Research and Academic Programs, is being recognized by the University in the 2013 class of faculty research “millionaires.” This elite group is comprised of faculty members who have served as Principle Investigator (PI) on more than $1 million in externally supported research during their tenure at the University of Memphis.

Executive MBA Program Honors Top Two Students with Dean’s Award
This Fall 2012, the Executive MBA Program graduated its first Executive MBA December Class under the new, 17-month format.  The 17 graduates represented various industries and companies, both domestic and international.

Seven FCBE Accounting Students Awarded Scholarships
Seven Fogelman College students in the School of Accountancy were awarded the 2013 Memphis Chapter Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accounting (TSCPA) Scholarships. These students Kristin Ruthschman, Zachary Willis, Lisa Lyons, Ben Gardner, Amy Teng, Britney McWilliams and Katherine Pugh all received monetary gifts as well as public recognition at the TSPCA award luncheon in February.

Dr. Bill Kettinger

Dr. Bill Kettinger Appointed Senior Editor of MIS Quarterly
Dr. Bill Kettinger, FedEx Chair of Excellence in Management Information Systems, recently accepted an appointment as Senior Editor of MIS Quarterly after previously serving as Associate Editor.  In addition, he recently completed a 4-year term as Associate Editor of Information Systems Research (ISR).  These two journals are the two highest ranked academic journals in the management information systems field.

Dr. Albert Okunade

Dr. Albert Okunade Honored by Economics Association
Albert Okunade, a FCBE economics professor, received a Certificate of Recognition in appreciation of his dedicated service and contributions to the goals of the African Finance and Economics Association (AFEA) as the immediate past secretary-treasurer. He was presented the award at the joint annual meetings of the Allied Social Sciences Associations (ASSA) in San Diego, CA this past January. During his tenure in office, Professor Okunade spearheaded a number of initiatives and reforms including the association's official Journal of African Development.

Four FCBE Staff Members Win Fogelman Force Awards
Four staff members received Fogelman Force Awards at the College Faculty and Staff Meeting in December.  Established in 2009 by a group of Fogelman faculty, the Fogelman Force Awards Program provides an avenue for faculty to recognize the outstanding efforts and contributions of staff who support College programs and activities.

Dr. Bill Kettinger

MIS Professor Kettinger Awarded Fulbright Visiting Professorship
Dr. William Kettinger, FedEx Chair of Excellence in Management Information Systems, has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright Visiting Professorship for the period from March to July, 2013. The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to “increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.”

SunTrust Bank Makes Generous Donation to FCBE
SunTrust Bank fulfilled their commitment to the Fogelman College of Business and Economics. In 2006, they committed to donating $1 million to the University of Memphis in an effort to further its progressive and positive effects upon the Memphis community. Of this total amount, Fogelman College received $750,000. The remaining $250,000 was given to the Rudi Scheidt School of Music.

Dr. David Spiceland

Dr. David Spiceland’s Textbook Goes Global
Dr. David Spiceland, a Professor of Accountancy at FCBE, has received numerous accolades for his text book, Intermediate Accounting. Most recently, McGraw-Hill published a global edition of Spiceland’s textbook, now in its seventh edition. The textbook is being published in Canadian and Chinese editions.

Kemmons Wilson School

Kemmons Wilson School Students Win First Place
A team of students from the Kemmons Wilson School (KWS) placed first at the annual Hospitality Entrepreneurial Summit. The summit was held at the University of Delaware and was sponsored by Marriott International, McDonalds Restaurants and ARAMARK.  Over 200 students from twelve universities and twelve high schools participated.

Assessment of Learning Program Ensures High Academic Standards at FCBE
The Fogelman College of Business and Economics is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).  More than 650 member institutions hold AACSB Accreditation. Overall, nearly 50 countries and territories are represented by AACSB-accredited schools.

Dr. David Kemme

Dr. David Kemme Selected for Prestigious Fellowship
David Kemme, FCBE economics professor and Chair of Excellence, was selected as a recipient of a fellowship for the 2012-2013 Short-Term Travel Grant (STG) Program. The STG Program is a part of the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX).

Accounting Ph.D. Student Invited to Attend Scholarly Conference
FCBE doctoral student in the School of Accountancy, Saad Murtuza Siddiqui, has been selected by a national scholarly committee to attend the American Accounting Association (AAA) 2013 Doctoral Consortium in Tahoe City, California. The Doctoral Consortium, which is will be held in June, is sponsored by Deloitte and J. Michael Cook. It is considered one of the most prestigious events offered by the AAA. The consortium is conducted by leading accounting scholars and provides a research forum for stimulating nationally ranked doctoral students to pursue research in significant emerging areas in accounting.

Dr. Steven Jordan Receives Recognition for Articles
Dr. Steven Jordan, a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Finance, recently had his sole-authored paper accepted for publication in the prestigious academic journal, Quantitative Finance. The paper “Is Momentum a Self-fulfilling Prophecy?” seeks to demonstrate that momentum can profitably exist in equilibrium at a finite level of trade.  The only requirements are that, one, market prices contain noise and, two, subsets of traders believe that past prices can be used to predict future prices.

The Executive MBA program at the Fogelman College is an intensive 17-month program offered exclusively to students with five years of experience in executive roles. The program results in savvy business professionals learning and collaborating about a number of current business issues. Many of the students report seeing significant career growth since beginning and/or graduating from the program.

Brian Janz and John Amis Win Best Paper Award
Dr. Brian Janz and Dr. John Amis were awarded the Best Overall Paper Award which was presented at the Western Academy of Management Annual Conference in Santé Fe, New Mexico in March 2013. MIS Professors’ Articles are Accepted in Top-Rated MIS Journal
Dr. Bill Kettinger, a FCBE Professor and FedEx Chair of Excellence in MIS, recently published an article in the prestigious academic journal, International Journal of Product Research. His article titled, “The Value of Information Systems for Product Recovery Management,” discussed the role of information systems in product recovery management.

Fogelman College Professor in the Department of Management, Dr. Rabi Bhagat, was recently invited and appointed as a member of the international journal, Creative Economy and Social Innovations. This journal is published by the Samara International School for Advance Cultural Studies located in Samara, Russia.

FCBE Professors Receive Best Paper Award
Fogelman College finance professors, Dr. Pankaj Jain and Dr. Thomas McInish, and recent Ph.D. graduate, Dr. Chinmay Jain, were recently honored by a prestigious academic journal, The Financial Review. Their paper “Short Selling: The Impact of SEC Rule 201 of 2010,” which was published last year, was named as one of the journal’s best published papers of 2012.

Emin Babakus, Professor at the Department of Marketing & Supply Chain Management, Aliosha Alexandrov (U of M Ph.D.) and Bryan Lilly, both at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, have a forthcoming article on consumer word of mouth titled "The Effects of Social- and Self-Motives on the Intentions to Share Positive and Negative Word of Mouth" in the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science.
