FCBE and FedEx Volunteers Share Career Development Tips with Future Leaders

For release:  December 17, 2013

This past November, FedEx Services and the Fogelman College of Business and Economics hosted a Resume and Interview Boot Camp for the Boys & Girls Club (BGC) of Greater Memphis at its Ira Samelson Jr. Branch. The boot camp offered a professional development opportunity for volunteers, who provided resume and interview tips for attendees in a fun and engaging atmosphere.

FCBE volunteers performed a career-dress fashion show for BGC students, showcasing a range of styles that BGC students were encouraged to critique for interview suitability. Some styles sported by FCBE students included a bright pink dress with stiletto heels, a ski hat and t-shirt combination, highly reflective sunglasses and purple socks with flip flops and pajama pants. BGC students aptly rated these outfits “inappropriate” interview attire.

FCBE students also led a discussion about elevator speeches, demonstrating for BGC attendees both the right and wrong ways to use them.

FedEx Service volunteers led discussions about resume tips, applications and social media, as well as the do’s and don’ts of interview etiquette. BGC students were given an opportunity to practice answering potential interview questions with help and guidance from volunteers.

“I could not be more proud of our Fogelman business majors,” stated Kathy Tuberville, director of Avron B. Fogelman Professional Development Center. “It was so engaging and inspiring to see our volunteers working directly with the Boys & Girls Club students to provide guidance and information that will help shape the future leaders of our community.”

The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Memphis serves nearly 4,000 members between the ages of 6 and 18 each year by providing the fun experiences and critical guidance kids need to build bright futures.
