Dr. Robin Poston Presents Research at Georgia State University
For release: November 22, 2013
Dr. Robin Poston, from the Fogelman College’s Department of Management Information
Systems, engaged with the audience and shared a research paper entitled, ”Using Resistance
as an Information Source to Enable Iterative Development Adoption” at The J. Mack
Robinson College of Business, at Georgia State University. The audience included
twelve faculty and eight Ph.D. students from the Department of Computer Information
Systems. Among those in attendance were Regents’ Professor, Dr. Arun Rai, who recently
became an Association of Information Systems (AIS) Fellow being ranked sixth in the
world for work published between 2000 and 2010.
The research is co-authored by Jasbir Dhaliwal and Jignya Patel and supported by the
Systems Testing Excellence Program of the FedEx Institute of Technology. The research
examines the phenomena of the currently expanding adoption of iterative (agile) software
development, which is a radical shift in the way software processes take place compared
to traditional waterfall methodologies. Given this shift, team members resist the
new ways of working, and while often seen by project managers as a negative behavior
to be stifled, resistance can be informative for those in charge of transitioning
toward adopting iterative methods. Utilizing information systems theories about the
mechanisms for responding to resistance, the current research infuses the theoretical
notions of social intelligence into models of how project managers can achieve iterative
adoption success. The research illustrates these concepts utilizing geographically-dispersed
multi-site case study data to illustrate how project managers can utilize team member
resistance with iterative development practices to achieve adoption success.
Georgia State University’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business is ranked among the
nation’s top 25 programs in biennial rankings by Bloomberg Businessweek, and No. 11 in the U.S. among programs at public universities, as well as No. 13
among U.S.-based programs in the Financial Times rankings of the world’s top programs. Fall 2013 celebrated the 45th anniversary
of the Department of Computer Information Systems, which is ranked No. 8 in the nation
according to U.S. News & World Report.
Dr. Robin Poston is an Associate Professor and Ph.D. Coordinator of Management Information
Systems, and Associate Director of the Systems Testing Excellence Program, FedEx Institute
of Technology, University of Memphis. Dr. Jasbir Dhaliwal, Ph.D. Larry Papasan Professor
of Information Systems, is the Associate Dean for Research and Academic Programs at
FCBE and the Director of Systems Testing Excellence Program, FedEx Institute of Technology.
Jignya Patel is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Management Information Systems.
