Dr. Tom Stafford & Dr. Marla Stafford’s Article in Decision Sciences Recognized among Top 10 Downloads

Dr. Tom Stafford, an associate professor of the MIS Department, and Dr. Marla Stafford, chairman of the Marketing & Supply Chain Management Department, published “Determining Uses and Gratifications for the Internet,” in Decision Sciences (volume 35, issue 2) in 2004. Since then, this article has been recognized by Wiley-Blackwell publishers as the 7th most downloaded article in the Decision Sciences Journal. This article, produced with cooperation from America Online as part of Stafford’s MIS dissertation, demonstrated user motivation for commercial Internet Service Provider subscriptions and is a widely cited example of Internet-motivation research. 

In addition to this recent article recognition, Dr. Tom Stafford has been in residence at the SAS Institute in Cary, North Carolina, this summer.  He has been training in large dataset management and analysis as well as advanced business analytics, which focuses on data mining of very large business datasets (e.g., "Big Data") using techniques designed to detect customer patterns and formulate predictive models of behavior based on analysis of such trends.

Dr. Tom Stafford intends to bring these skills to the classroom, training students for analytical roles in business intelligence positions in industry as part of the programs delivered by the MIS Department of Fogelman College.
