Dr. Richard Sweigard

Dean Appointed for the Herff College of Engineering

Dr. Richard Sweigard has been selected as the new dean of the Herff College of Engineering at the University of Memphis. He will begin these duties June 1, 2013. Sweigard has been the associate dean of engineering for administration and academic affairs at the University of Kentucky since 2007, where he has also been an associate professor or professor since 1988. He served as chair of the Department of Mining Engineering at UK for 14 years. He has also held teaching positions at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and The Pennsylvania State University. West TN

U of M named STEM Hub for West Tennessee

Further advancing the state’s recent growth in the teaching and learning of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), the Tennessee Department of Education and Battelle Memorial Institute announced the expansion of the Tennessee STEM Innovation Network (TSIN) into West Tennessee. The West Tennessee STEM Collaboratory, led by the University of Memphis, will serve as the TSIN STEM innovation hub in the region, while Shelby County Schools’ Southwind High School will house the Network’s STEM platform school. The West Tennessee STEM Hub will serve as a resource for the region to increase students’ interest in and preparation for STEM jobs. Read more…

The Intermodal Freight Transportation Institute Prepares Future Freight Leaders

The Intermodal Freight Transportation Institute (IFTI) as part of the National Center for Freight and Infrastructure Research and Education (CFIRE) sponsored a combined national Student Freight Symposium and Workforce Summit on February 5-6, 2013 at the University of Memphis. Student representatives from fourteen universities showcased their research, connected with industry experts, networked with their peers, and toured local freight facilities. The two programs were integrated to provide industry professionals opportunities to interact with some of the best transportation students from across the nation at both the undergraduate and graduate level.  Conversely, the students actively networked and participated in mock interviews with the industry representatives. Biomedical Engineering Faculty Search

The Herff College of Engieering invites applications and nominations for a position in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the level of associate or full professor. Candidates must have a PhD in Biological Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or substantively equivalent education. This person should specialize in nano-scale biomaterials that offer novel means for diagnosis and therapy of infection and tumors. So-called theranostic materials are of special interest. Singular materials, as well as composites of natural and man-made materials, such as DNA and nanoparticles, are welcome.
