Cooperative Education/Internship Program Features

The Cooperative Education Program in the Herff College of Engineering offers the traditional rotational co-op program experience. This type of program is structured so that a student alternates between full-time work assignments and full-time school attendance. However, many students prefer a cooperative educational experience whereby a student will work 10-20 hours per week for the employer and continue to take classes. In some institutions this sort of arrangement is designated as an internship rather than a co-op experience. Therefore, in the Herff College of Engineering, the two designations are often combined as “co-op/internship”.

Benefits of Cooperative Education

Some of the benefits that co-op students enjoy include:

  • They gain real-world experience in an engineering work environment.
  • This experience can prove valuable in their job search after graduation.  A significant number of co-op students receive permanent employment offers from their co-op employer.
  • They are paid for their co-op work and this can help offset the cost of their education.
  • The work experience can give meaning and relevance to the material covered in their classes.

The success that cooperative education has enjoyed over many years indicates that employers can also benefit from the arrangement.

“This opportunity has allowed me to experience a real working environment, see professional engineers in action, and participate in collecting data from equipment in the plant. My co-op has been beneficial to me by connecting concepts in the classroom to applications in real life and by helping me to grasp a better understanding of what I would like to do after graduation.”
