University of Memphis Honor Choir


January 25-26, 2024

The University of Memphis Rudi E. Scheidt Choral Area is excited to welcome singers and conductor-teachers for our 2024 Honor Choir.

This two-day Honor Choir event includes rehearsals and performances of the Honor Choir and a special performance by the University of Memphis University Singers. During the event, participants can work with an exceptional guest conductor, our own Choral Faculty, and choral conducting graduate students. We encourage choral directors to select their finest musicians for this exciting experience.

  • NEW TOTAL REGISTRATION: Each school can bring 12 of their best singers (3 per part).
    • Selected students should have the following qualities:
      • exemplary rehearsal behavior
      • excellent musicianship skills (sight-reading)
      • good vocal technique
      • choral singing experience
      • possess a desire to continue singing in college
    • If directors wish to bring more students or an unbalanced group, please send a request to Karen Zeferino

  • NO PREPARATION NEEDED: Music does not need to be taught ahead of time.

  • MUSIC INCLUDED: The cost is included in the singers’ registration fee.

  • UPDATED SINGER TRACK SCHEDULE: View the updated schedule.

  • CONDUCTOR TRACK: For all attending teachers who bring at least eight singers. View the updated schedule. Professional development credit is approved for Memphis Shelby County Schools teachers!

  • HONOR CHOIR SOCIAL: Pizza and drinks are provided by the UofM Choral Program.

Nomination & Fees

 

Students best suited for the Honor Choir possess the following qualities in this order:

  • Exemplary rehearsal behavior
  • Excellent musicianship skills (sight-reading)
  • Good vocal technique
  • Choral singing experience.

If possible, priority should be given to students who desire to continue singing in college.

Each school should aim to bring a balanced octet of singers (2 per part—SSAATTBB). If you need to bring a group not balanced with voice parts or wish to bring additional students, please send a request to Karen Zeferino

The participation fee is $60 per singer and includes:

  • Honor Choir music
  • Honor Choir t-shirt
  • Honor Choir Social

10:15 - 11:10 AM Session 1 with Dr. Kristina MacMullen, director of choral activities, Baylor University
11:15 AM - 12:10 PM Session 2 with Dr. Ryan Fisher, interim dean of the College of Communication and Fine Arts, University of Memphis
12:15 - 1:00 PM OPTIONS:
1:00 - 1:55 PM Honor Choir Social - pizza lunch provided
1:55 - 2:25 PM  Observe Mazi - Soprano/ Alto Choir rehearsal
  • Mazi starts at 1:15. Conductors are welcome to eat and observe starting at 1:15.
2:30 - 3:25 PM Session 3 with Dr. Kristina MacMullen
