Internship Success Stories

Lisa HuffstetlerI am the intern coordinator for the Department of Political Science. One of the largest programs we offer is the internship program with the Tennessee State Legislature. We send 16-20 students to Nashville during the spring semester where they are assigned to either a legislator or a committee and they spend the entire semester there learning about the legislative process. Virtually every intern will tell you it is a life changing experience, one of the best of their college careers. This program is good for students of all majors, not just political science. Anyone interested in politics will enjoy this experience!

Faculty Guide to Internships

An internship is a cooperative educational arrangement between the student, the University of Memphis, and a community partner. Each semester more than 2,000 U of M students are interning in schools, hospitals, businesses, government agencies and nonprofit organizations. Through internships, the community offers students the opportunity to:

  • Enhance professional development with first hand experience in the world of work
  • Build an effective resume that results in better job offers after graduation
  • Improve knowledge, skills, and abilities to meet career goals
  • Develop a network of professional contacts
  • Reinforce learning received in course work experience
  • Become familiar with future opportunities within and outside Memphis

Employers rate relevant work experience as the most important criteria during the job selection process. A high quality internship provides the key to a more meaningful education and a brighter future.
