New Student Orientation

Below is an abbreviated outline of the schedule for your session. You will receive a more detailed schedule when you arrive at NSO. Orientation is a continuous program with all activities scheduled in a necessary sequence.

9:40-11:45 Academic Advising
11:45-12:45 Information Fair and Luncheon
12:45-2:30 Financial Aid & Scholarships, Student Involvement, Residence Life & Dining, Campus Safety
2:30-4:30 Class Registration, Staff Offices Open, Campus Tours


Although you may finish earlier, please be prepared to stay until 4:30 p.m.

All incoming freshmen will receive a brochure in their mailbox with detailed information about New Student Orientation. If you did not receive a brochure in the mail, you may download one here. You must have been admitted to the University of Memphis in order to attend New Student Orientation.

Freshman Orientation Student Fee - $55
Includes two meals, refreshment breaks, and Orientation materials, and parking.

Health Form & Immunization Requirements

Varicella (Chicken Pox) Immunization

Proof of two Varicella (chicken pox) immunizations are required for all incoming students. Students must show proof of two vaccinations prior to registering for classes at New Student Orientation. Please note: The two doses must be given at least 30 days apart per CDC guidelines.

Students graduating from a Tennessee high school must provide proof of one vaccination given after graduation OR proof of two vaccinations given at any time.

Measles, Mumps and Rubella Immunizations

Proof of two MMR immunizations is required for all incoming students. Students who did not graduate from a Tennessee high school must show proof of two MMR immunizations.

Skin Test for Tuberculosis

Students who are not United States Citizens and are coming from areas of high tuberculosis transmission are required to have a Tuberculosis Skin Test (Mantoux, also known as PPD) before registering for classes the University of Memphis at New Student Orientation. The test must have been administered in the United States within the past six months. Visit https://www.memphis.edu/health/immunization/tb_skin.php for more information and a list of countries whose students may be excluded from receiving the test.

Hepatitis B and Meningitis Immunization Health History Form

Students who will be under the age of 18 during their orientation session must have the Meningococcal Meningitis and Hepatitis B Immunization Health History Form completed and signed by a parent or legal guardian. When completing the form, please mark your selection on both sections of the form and have your parent or legal guardian sign both sections of the form.

Student Health Services highly recommends students have both vaccinations. Students living in on-campus residence halls must be immunized against the meningococcal disease. The State of Tennessee requires students under the age of 22 who will be living in a University of Memphis residence hall to be immunized against meningococcal disease on or after their 16th birthday and to provide proof of receiving this immunization before moving into their residence hall.

Parent and Guest Program

We want to involve parents and families in the college experience, and we have designed a program especially for you! This program will familiarize you with the University of Memphis and everything we have to offer. You will have the opportunity to have your questions answered and become acquainted with the campus so you can better appreciate your favorite student's college experience.

This casual but informative program will give you the opportunity to:

  • Meet with representative from academic programs.
  • Discover the vast array of support services available to students.
  • Tour the campus and see where activities take place.
  • Meet with currently enrolled students.
  • Learn about educational costs.
  • Talk with current parents about their experiences.

We encourage you to support your favorite freshman by attending this special program!
