Dr. Henry Kurtz
Dr. Henry Kurtz will be stepping down as dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at
the University of Memphis to become special assistant to the provost for academic
planning, effective July 1. Dr. Tom Nenon will serve as interim dean of Arts & Sciences.
Kurtz joined the University of Memphis faculty in 1983 as an assistant professor in
the Department of Chemistry. He was promoted to associate professor and was named
chairman of the department in 1992. Other roles have included interim chairman of
the Department of Microbiology & Molecular Cell Sciences and director of the Computational
Research on Materials Institute.
Dr. Tom Nenon
Kurtz was named interim dean in 2000 before his appointment as dean in July 2002.
Nenon is a professor of philosophy and vice provost for assessment, institutional
research and reporting. Recently his work has centered on strategic planning, and
he has played a key role in facilitating strong improvements in the University’s student
retention and graduation rates. He also served as interim provost.
