Curriculum Requirements

To obtain the MBA degree, students must complete 10 Core Courses (30 hours), plus 2 elective courses (6 hours), for a total of 36 credit hours.

Core Courses (30 credit hours):

The MBA Core consists of 10 courses (3 credit hours each).

  1. ACCT 7080 - Financial and Managerial Accounting for Managers
  2. BA 7503 - Business Analytics for Managers (pre-requisite: SCMS 7110)
  3. BA 7501 Leadership and Negotiation
  4. ECON 7100 - Economics for the Global Executive
  5. FIR 7155 - Global Financial Management
  6. MKTG 7140 - Global Strategic Marketing
  7. MIS 7650 - Information Systems in the Global Enterprise
  8. SCMS 7313 - Supply Chain Operations Management
  9. SCMS 7110 - Intro to Business Analytics
  10. MGMT 7160 - Global Strategic Management*

* MGMT 7160 is the MBA Program Capstone Course and must be taken in the last semester. If you are in your last semester and need to register for this course, please submit a permit request here.

Elective Courses (6 credit hours)

Aside from the MBA Core, students must complete 2 elective graduate courses in the Fogelman College of Business and Economics.

APPROVED MBA ELECTIVES: Any 6000 or 7000 level Fogelman offered course.

The Fogeman College offers courses starting with the following prefixes:

  • ACCT
  • BA
  • ECON
  • FIR
  • MGMT
  • MIS
  • MKTG
  • SCMS 

Students may NOT receive credit for a 6000-level course if they have credit at the 4000-level for the cognate class (e.g. ACCT 4130 is the cognate class for ACCT 6130).

Elective courses outside the Fogelman College require approval. Contact your advisor for more information.

Suggested Course Load

You can complete your MBA degree at your own pace, making sure you have all the time you need to make the most out of your experience. On average, for every 1 credit hour in which you enroll, you can expect to spend 2-3 hours outside of class studying.

Career Development Opportunities

The Professional Development Center (PDC), housed in the Fogelman College of Business and Economics, offers a host of resources for career growth:

  • Resume Building Resources: this includes templates you can download. These templates have been tested with resume screening tools used by employers.
  • Career Training Resources: here you can work on your interviewing skills, presentation skills, learn about workplace ethics, among others.
  • Networking Events: the PDC organizes and plans a host of networking and learning events to support you and your career planning throughout the semester.
  • Fogelman Internship and Career Network (FIN): once you join FIN, you will gain access to internships and job opportunities with companies in varying industries inside and outside of Memphis.

Graduation Requirements

GPA Requirements

  • Your cumulative GPA must be at least 3.0 on all graduate work undertaken at The University of Memphis, whether or not the courses count toward your degree.
  • Grades of "D" or "F" are computed in the GPA, but not counted toward degree credit requirements.
  • No more than seven (7) hours of "C+," "C," or "C-" will be counted toward degree requirements.

Graduation Instructions

If you're planning to graduate this semester, please make sure you fulfill the requirements to graduate.

If you fulfill the requirements to graduate, you will need to:

  1. Apply to Graduate in your MyMemphis portal
  2. Complete and Submit a Candidacy Form

Note: JD/MBA and MHA/MBA students must apply to graduate and complete a Candidacy Form for each program separately.

 

Apply to Graduate in your MyMemphis portal:

  • Log-in to your MyMemphis portal.
  • Click on the "My Degree" tab, which is under “Student Pages”.
  • On the top right side of the page you will find “Commencement and Graduation”

    Step 1
    :
    Click "Read Prerequisites for Applying for Graduation" and read.

    Step 2
    :
    Click "Apply to Graduate"
    - Select the current term (e.g. Spring Term 2023).
    - Select your program(s)
    - Submit.

    Step 3
    :
    Click “Diploma Mailing and Cap and Gown Form” (under "Commencement and Graduation"), and fill it out.

    Step 4
    :
    This step will be emailed to you from the Commencement Office at a later date. Please make sure to always check your Memphis email account.

Complete Candidacy Form for a Master's Degree:

  1. Visit the Graduate School Candidacy Forms page.  
  2. Scroll down and click on “Begin A New Master’s Degree Candidacy Form”
  3. Follow the line-by-line instructions (provided below) on how to fill the Candidacy Form for your MBA degree.

Line-by-line Instructions to complete your Candidacy Form

A Candidacy Form has 4 sections. Click on the relevant section below for line-by-line instructions. 

  • Do you have a transfer credit from another institution? Answer yes or no.
  • Have you applied to graduate in your myMemphis portal? Answer yes or no.
  • Which Graduate Catalog was used to satisfy degree requirements? Enter the academic year you began your degree. E.g., if you started the program in the Spring of 2022, your catalog year is 2021-2022.
  • What semester and year do you wish to graduate? Enter the semester and year.
  • Name: Will auto populate.
  • Banner ID: Will auto populate.
  • Address: Enter your address including, City, State, and Zip.
  • Email address: Will auto populate.
  • Home Phone: Enter your home phone number.
  • Work Phone: Enter your work phone number if applicable.


  • Degree: Master of Business Administration (MBA)
  • Major: Business Administration
  • Concentration: None, or select from list if you completed a concentration.
  • Secondary Concentration (optional): None, or select from list if applicable.
  • Thesis Title: Leave Blank.
  • Thesis Hours: Leave Blank.
  • Major Professor: Leave Blank.
  • Complete List of Courses Required in Degree Program:  The list of all graduate level courses you have taken at the UofM will auto populate.
    • Check mark only the courses required for your MBA degree program. This includes:
      • MBA core courses, AND
      • Elective courses, including Experiential Learning Credit (ELC) if applicable.
    • Make sure all courses with a check mark satisfy the GPA requirements.
    • If you are currently taking a class, use the drop-down menu to select "IP" in the "Grade" column (to indicate "In-Progress"). 
    • Because courses auto populate, you may see duplicates of courses repeated, dropped and/or withdrawn, or a zero-credit orientation course (NSO 6000). All these should not be check marked.
  • Calculated number of required hours completed: This will auto populate.
  • Total number of hours required in degree program: This depends on your catalog term and MBA program.
    • Your total credit hours are 36 if you are:
      • A UMGlobal (Online only) student, or
      • Completing the MBA degree without a concentration, or
      • A Dual Degree (JD/MBA, PharmD/MBA or MHA/MBA) student.
    • If you started the program prior to Fall 2020 and completed the three 2-credit hour MBA courses (ACCT 7050, MGMT 7135, and MKTG 7555),  your total credit hours are 33. If you did not complete all three 2-credit hour classes, your total credit hours are 36.
  • Doctoral Students Total Hours department accepted from previous Master’s program: 0

 

Note: Both "Calculated number of required hours completed" and "Total number of hours required in degree program"  should match.

Exception: students admitted prior to the Fall of 2020 who completed the 33-credit hour MBA program, but substituted one of the 2-credit hour courses with a 3-credit hour course. For example, if you completed the 3-credit hour version of ACCT 7050 instead of the previous 2-credit hour version, then you will graduate with a "Calculated number of required hours completed" equal to 34, but the "Total number of hours required in degree program" is 33.



For the Graduation Program, we would like to list all the degrees you have previously earned. Please provide the following information – Degree, Year, Institution:

    • "Smith, Emily - emelonas@memphis.edu" (if your last name starts with A - L),  OR
    • "Jones, April - jhrris12@memphis.edu" (if your last name starts with M - Z)
  • Graduate Studies Coordinator (select program below): click on the drop-down menu, scroll down to "Fogelman College of Business and Economics," and select:
    • Online MBA: John Cicala. 

Click the "Submit" button at the bottom of the form.
