Pause to Reflect

Thursday, March 18, 2021

Dear University Community:

Again, we have witnessed acts of incomprehensible violence and murders in our country, stirring considerable fear and concern among all, particularly Asian-Americans. As we pause to reflect on and grieve the lives lost, knowing that such cruelty and hate impact us all, our hearts go out to those families and friends of the victims and survivors.

The University of Memphis is committed to academic excellence via diversity and launched the Eradicating Systemic Racism and Promoting Social Justice initiative to use the collective scholarship of faculty, staff, students, alumni, corporate and community partners to address the challenges of race and social justice magnified during these difficult times. The United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racism is Sunday, March 21. In the wake of the recent violence, we encourage you to honor the innocent lives lost by continuing to oppose racism and facilitate dignity and respect for all.

If you would like to share your thoughts, please do not hesitate to reach out. Students who would like to speak with one of our professional support staff should contact the Dean of Students, Dr. Justin Lawhead, at justin.lawhead@memphis.edu. All faculty, staff and students may contact the UofM Counseling Center at counseling@memphis.edu or 901.678.2068.
