Stepping Down: A Legacy of Ethical Stewardship in Research

After 11 years, Whelan has officially stepped away from the UofM Intitutional Review Board

After more than a decade of dedicated service, Dr. James (Jim) Whelan, research professor in Physcology, has officially stepped down as Chair of the University of Memphis Institutional Review Board (IRB). The milestone marks the end of a remarkable tenure that spanned over 11 years, during which he played a critical role in upholding the ethical integrity of human subjects research at the University.

The IRB is an essential body required by federal regulations to safeguard the rights and well-being of individuals who participate in research studies. Under Whelan’s leadership, the IRB reviewed more than 12,000 research protocols and held over 250 board meetings, ensuring that all projects met rigorous standards for ethical research.

This service reflects not only a professional commitment to research compliance but also a profound respect for the individuals and communities who make research possible. The University of Memphis community extends its deep appreciation for Whelan’s exceptional leadership, dedication, and lasting impact on the institution’s research mission.

"On behalf of the University of Memphis and the IRB team, we want to express our deepest gratitude for Dr. James Whelan’s exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication as IRB Chair for the last 11 years.
