UofM’s Charles Langston Honored with 2025 Harry Fielding Reid Medal
Pioneering seismologist recognized for transformative contributions to earthquake research
Dr. Charles Langston, professor emeritus at the Center for Earthquake Research and Information (CERI) at the University of Memphis, has been awarded the prestigious 2025 Harry Fielding Reid Medal. This honor recognizes his groundbreaking contributions to seismology, particularly his development of receiver function methodology.
Langston’s pioneering work in the late 1970s and early 1980s revolutionized the way scientists extract and analyze seismic signals, allowing for detailed imaging of the Earth's crust and upper mantle. His methods have become fundamental in observational seismology, supporting major seismic research efforts worldwide, including EarthScope Consortium projects and planetary missions like Mars InSight.
This well-deserved recognition highlights Langston’s lasting impact on the field and the University of Memphis’s leadership in seismic research.
