UofM Launches Gerontology & Positive Aging Research Initiative
New research thrust will focus on aging research in the Memphis region
The University of Memphis Division of Research & Innovation recently launched a research initiative focused on gerontology and positive aging research. The research initiative is led by Dr. Kallol Bhattacharyya, assistant professor in the Division of Health Systems Management and Policy and a Health Economist in the Center for Public Health Informatics, Data, Equity, Analytics, and Systems (PH-IDEAS) at the University of Memphis School of Public Health.
The kick-off meeting for the initiative was held to inform the community about current aging research initiatives in Memphis, gather feedback, and discuss how research can better address the needs of older adults and support the development of age-friendly communities in Memphis, Shelby County, the Delta Region, and the United States.
Due to the global demographic shift towards an increasingly aging population, we have an opportunity to transform how we experience and think about getting older and embrace the diversity and contribution that this population can bring to society. The aging population in Memphis and the larger Delta region has seen a significant increase in the number of residents aged 65 and older, coupled with a decline in overall population. This demographic shift is influenced by factors such as out-migration of younger residents, declining birth rates, and increased life expectancy. These statistics underscore the need for research and support services for positive aging in our region.
Key elements of healthy aging policies and services encompass a broad range of areas that emphasize health and wellness, including equal access to healthcare, financial security, housing, transportation, social engagement, and age-friendly environments to foster a positive view of aging and empower older adults to thrive, in improving their quality of life and combating agism. These needs require urgent interdisciplinary collaborations in and outside academia with a positive outlook and attitude towards the aging process.
The initial event held on August 21st at the FedEx Institute of Technology focused on the following topics:
- Overview of key areas of research: understanding the biology of aging, investigating the impact of age-related diseases (e.g., Alzheimer’s and dementia), promoting healthy lifestyle choices, developing interventions, addressing socioeconomic factors and social determinants of health, translating research into practice.
- Discussing interdisciplinary opportunities: public health, developmental psychology, clinical psychology, mental health, health sciences, neuropsychological rehabilitation, medicine, nursing, sociology, anthropology, social policy, social work, and economics in advancing aging research and enhancing community partnerships.
- Current gerontology funding opportunities and initiatives spanning local, state, national, and international domains.
- Stakeholder mapping, resources, partnerships, and strategic planning that will support the University of Memphis in becoming a leader in age-friendly research.
