Health Care Interpreter Program Feedback

What students are saying about the Interpreter Course:

  • “The Health Care Interpreter course offered by Ms. Espi Ralston opened the doors of a whole new career for me. I received my training between 2005 and 2007 in level I and level II of the “Hablamos Juntos” curriculum. Everything I learned in these two courses I used as tools to begin working, initially as an independent contractor, and later as a full time employee in a leadership position for a health care organization in Memphis.  In my daily work I never forget to apply the knowledge about ethics and standards of practice. Without the training I received from Ms. Ralston I wouldn’t have been able to successfully navigate through “grey areas” and challenging interpreting sessions with difficult terminology and other situations such as appropriate positioning, end of life, interpreter role boundaries, and more.  I have also witnessed how the Healthcare Interpreter Program at the University of Memphis has grown and has trained other talented individuals; some of them hired to work in my team of interpreters as well as interpreter teams in the most important hospitals and clinics in Memphis.  Finally the solid knowledge acquired during both trainings served me well when I tested and passed the examinations for my CMI credential in 2010.“
