What is edTPA?

EdTPA is a performance-based, subject-specific assessment and support system used by teacher preparation programs throughout the United States to emphasize, measure and support the skills and knowledge that all teachers need from Day 1 in the classroom. For each handbook field, the placement is a Pre-Kindergarten to 12th grade classroom. edTPA is a subject-specific assessment that includes versions for 27 teaching fields. What content areas does edTPA assess?

See the current list of assessment areas>. In Tennessee, the assessment area to be completed is determined by the intended teaching endorsement.

Why do I have to complete edTPA?

At the October 14, 2016, meeting of the TN State Board of Education, the Professional Assessments Policy 5.105 passed on final reading. That policy states:

"To become fully licensed to teach in Tennessee, educators must demonstrate both content and pedagogical competencies. Current policy requires the use of the Praxis assessment series for assessments of core knowledge and content knowledge. This item recommends the adoption of a new required assessment of pedagogical and pedagogical content knowledge-the edTPA-for all initial licensure candidates by January 2019."
