The Department of Health and Sport Sciences (HSS) provides students with a quality
education focused on the fundamental principles of health, exercise, nutrition, physical
activity, and leisure and sport, while equipping them with the cutting-edge knowledge
and skills needed to fulfill leadership roles in their chosen area of specialty. From
introductory courses in health and wellness, to specialized courses in nutrition therapy, biomechanics, exercise physiology, physical education teacher education, sport management, and program planning, students are taught to analyze and synthesize data, and to develop alternative approaches
to problem solving. As a result, students are prepared to move rapidly upward in their
chosen career path upon graduation, whether seeking employment or advanced graduate
study. Specifically, HSS undergraduate degrees may prepare students for graduate work
in a variety of settings (e.g., physical therapy, occupational therapy, physical education,
coaching, strength and conditioning, medicine, dietetics and clinical nutrition, sport
commerce, and more). Faculty members within all academic disciplines are highly engaged
in relevant research—presenting and publishing their findings in a variety of mediums
across the country and around the world. Five undergraduate and five graduate degree
programs are currently offered within HSS.
Physical Education (PHED) Activity Courses
In addition to the degree programs offered through HSS, over fifty physical education activity courses are offered through the department, serving close to 4000 students per year. Our
activity course instructors strive to provide outstanding service to students and
in some cases, are world renown. Please consider taking an elective physical activity
course to strengthen and condition both your mind and body while you pursue your educational
endeavors. Maintaining a physically active lifestyle is paramount to your health and
we strongly encourage all students to adopt a lifestyle of regular physical activity,
structured exercise, and optimal nutritional intake. All students registering for
activity courses are requested to complete a PAR-Q and an informed consent form prior to participating. In some circumstances, a physician approval form may be needed. If you have questions about the physical activity program, please
contact the program director, Dr. Harriette Lavenue .
