Prepare for your Advising Appointment

Our advising team is awesome, but they have to meet with a LOT of students. Help them out and speed up your advising process by following these quick tips:

  • Schedule your appointment in advance (remember, LOTS of students, so plan ahead!)
  • Review the Undergraduate Catalog section for your degree so you're familiar with what courses are required.
  • The Arts & Sciences degree sheets are also helpful in plotting your schedule.
  • You can view your transcript in myMemphis in case you've forgotten which courses you've completed.
  • Feel free to map out a rough schedule of courses you'd like to take this semester.
  • Be sure to ask for alternate courses in case a course fills up, is unavailable or doesn't fit your schedule.
  • If you have notes from your last advising appointment, be sure to bring those!
  • Prepare a list of questions. Having trouble in any of your courses? Advisors can suggest resources to help. Interested in adding a minor? Find out what that entails. Wanting to go to graduate school? They have info about that, also.
  • Last but not least, thank your advisor. They're here to help, but it's nice to remind them they're appreciated.

Your advisor is here to ADVISE, but ultimately your academic choices are up to you. Being prepared will help make those decisions easier!
