How can I request a transcript?
You may request a transcript in the following ways:
- By Fax: (901) 678-3249
-
By Mail:
University of Memphis Transcripts 003 Wilder Tower Memphis, TN 38152-3520
- In person: 003 Wilder Tower (A picture ID is required.)
What information do you need from me?
The University of Memphis requires written authorization from you before it will release your transcript. Thus, your handwritten signature is required. In any request for a transcript:
-
Provide/Indicate:
- Your complete name and former names.
- Your U-Number or Social Security Number (if you do not have a U-Number).
- Your birth date.
- The first and last years you attended the University of Memphis.
- If the transcript should be held for current semester grades or a degree. If so, indicate type of degree you will be receiving.
- If the transcript should be held for a pending grade change. If so, indicate the course and semester.
- If you attended Law School.
-
The number of copies you want and the addresses to which they should be mailed.
Note: You may request that your transcript be sent to you. However, any transcript mailed directly to you will have "Issued to Student" stamped on it.
Many institutions require that your transcript be mailed directly to them and will not accept a transcript that has been "Issued to Student."

- Include any Enclosures that are to accompany the transcript.
- Sign your request. Again, any request for a transcript must contain your handwritten signature.
What does it cost?
You may request as many as 20 transcripts free. However, you must pay $5.00 per copy for every transcript over 20. Also, if you are requesting more than 20 transcripts, you will need to complete an "Excess Transcripts Charge" form as well as a "Transcript Request" form (see "Request Forms" below).
We will not release your transcript if you have any outstanding obligations to the University (unpaid fees or fines, unreturned equipment or uniforms, etc.), or if a "hold" has been placed on your records for judicial, admissions-related, or other reasons.
Request Forms
Depending on how you submit your request, use one of these two "Transcript Request" forms:
- In-office "Transcript Request" form - Use this form when making a transcript request in our office, 003 Wilder Tower. The form is available at the Transcripts desk. One of the carbon copies of this form will serve to display the mailing address when your transcript is mailed out.
- Off-campus "Transcript Request" form - Use this pdf form only if you want to fax or mail your request to our office and do not intend to come in. Complete and print the form and then mail or FAX it to the Transcripts Office (address and FAX number are on the form). If you need additional sheets, attach these as well.
Additionally, if you are requesting more than 20 transcripts, you will need to submit one of these two "Excess Transcripts Charge" forms as well:
- In-office "Excess Transcripts Charge" form - Use this form when making your request in the Registrar's Office, 003 Wilder Tower. The form is available at the Transcripts desk; the people at the Transcripts desk will explain what you are to do with the form.
- Off-campus "Excess Transcripts Charge" form - Use this pdf form when faxing or mailing your payment for excess transcripts. Complete the form and then mail or FAX it to the Bursar's Office (address and FAX number are on the form).
How long does it take?
Normal processing time is 5 business days. This amount of time is needed for the following reasons:
- Volume. We currently process approximately 50,000 transcript requests a year.
- Accuracy. We review each transcript for accuracy before we send it out.
- Legibility. Any course work taken prior to Fall 1988 will be recorded on microfilm or in our imaging system. Microfilmed or imaged transcript information often must be cleaned up before the official transcript can be sent out.
- Corrections. If your request contains errors (ex., name on request does not match your name while attending; missing signature), we must research and reconcile the errors before we can process your request.
Also, unless you indicate that you will pick up your transcript at our office, we will send it out by postal mail.
| Note: We do not FAX transcripts. |
Do I really need an official transcript?
If you simply want a transcript for your own personal reference (that is, you want your own record of the courses you have taken and the grades you have earned), you do not need an official transcript at all. You can use Student Self Service to view and print an Academic Transcript (unofficial transcript) instead.
PLEASE NOTE: Because the Self Service Academic Transcript is web-based, it can retrieve only courses that you took in Fall 1988 or later. Courses taken prior to Fall 1988 are stored on microfiche and cannot be retrieved online. If you need courses from Summer 1988 and earlier, you will have to request an official transcript.
The ease with which you can access the Academic Transcript screen varies depending on your enrollment status:
Currently Enrolled Students View and print your Academic Transcript in Student Self Service.
Recently Enrolled Students Your portal account remains active until the end of the semester following the last semester in which you attended. (For example, if Fall is the last semester in which you attended, your account will remain active throughout the Spring semester, but will expire in Summer.) During this one-semester grace period, you may still view and print your Academic Transcript.
Once this grace period expires, your portal account will be deactivated. You cannot view your unofficial Academic Transcript without an active account. Call the Information Technology Helpdesk at (901) 678-8888 and request that your account be reactivated. Your account will be reactivated for two (2) hours. You will be able to view and print your Academic Transcript. If you need more time when the two-hour window expires, contact the Helpdesk again.
Previously Enrolled, but not Recently Enrolled Students If you have not attended for several semesters, or even years, you will not have an active portal account. Call the Information Technology Helpdesk at (901) 678-8888 and request that a temporary account be established for you. This account will be active for two hours only. This will give you time to view and print your Academic Transcript. If you need more time when the two-hours window expires, contact the Helpdesk again.
