The Polytechnic@UofM
A New Pathway to Workforce-Ready Degrees
The Polytechnic@UofM, a new academic unit within the Herff College of Engineering, is redefining applied education by offering flexible, workforce-aligned degree pathways. Designed to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in high-need industries, the Polytechnic provides students with accessible, transfer-friendly and experience-recognizing degree options that translate directly into career success.
At the core of this new initiative is the Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS), launching in Fall 2025 with concentrations in manufacturing supervision, construction leadership and information technology. These programs are built to serve learners at all stages — from technical college graduates and adult learners to current University of Memphis students — providing them with the tools to advance in today’s competitive workforce.

With reduced barriers, flexible transfer policies and credit for prior learning, the Polytechnic opens doors to new and returning learners, including those from Tennessee Colleges of Applied Technology and community colleges.
Transfer-Friendly
Earn credit for your associate degree, work experience, industry certifications and licensures — accelerating your time to degree completion.
Holistic
We recognize that education, work, and life are interconnected. The Polytechnic supports flexible entry and re-entry points, ensuring that students can move seamlessly between learning and employment.

A Forward-Looking Approach to Applied Learning
The Polytechnic@UofM directly supports the Tennessee Master Plan for Higher Education through:
Early post-secondary opportunities (EPSOs): Dual enrollment and high school partnerships support early skill development.
Adult outreach: Non-degree programs, stackable credentials and continuing education prepare adults for higher-wage opportunities.
Work-based learning: Strong articulation agreements and recognition of technical training ensure clear, achievable pathways to a bachelor’s degree.
Future workforce alignment: Industry advisory boards and a responsive curriculum process keep programs agile and relevant, with future expansions planned in applied AI, cybersecurity, automation and healthcare technology.
