Mike Skirius joined the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology & Research as a full-time faculty member in August 2025, after teaching as an adjunct in the Counseling program since 2021. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor – Mental Health Service Provider (LPC-MHSP), a Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CCMHC), and a National Certified Counselor (NCC).
Mike has worked in a variety of settings, including residential treatment, secondary and post-secondary education, community clinics, and correctional facilities. His clinical focus has centered on children, adolescents, and offender populations. He also works in the areas of threat assessment and violence risk management, particularly with youth and school-based settings.
He has been published in peer reviewed journals such as the Journal of Addictions and Offender Counseling and the Journal of Creativity in Mental Health. Beyond publishing, Mike has had the privilege to train and provide consultation to groups across the U.S. military, law enforcement, higher education, and K–12 schools on topics such as crisis intervention, verbal de-escalation, suicide assessment, and supporting students with issues ranging from learning differences to self-harm.
He is an active member of the American Counseling Association, the Association for Child and Adolescent Counseling, and the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals.
At the University of Memphis, Mike looks forward to helping prepare the next generation of counselors while continuing to serve the Memphis and West Tennessee community. His ongoing clinical and teaching interests include child and adolescent counseling, threat assessment, and building safe and supportive environments for young people.
