The CPL Portfolio and Pre Assessed Credit process is intended for admitted and enrolled students.
I think I want to do a portfolio. How do I get started?
Students interested in pursuing CPL through the creation of a learning portfolio should follow these steps.
What should I put down for "Area of Study" on the Letter of Intent?
The Areas of Study on your Letter of Intent will be specific to your experience and to the requirements for your program of study. Consult with your academic advisor concerning appropriate Areas of Study. Generally speaking there are two ways to approach this decision:
Course Match Portfolio is written to demonstrate that the student has specific credit for prior learning that validates completion of the outcomes of a particular course that is already found in the course catalog at University of Memphis.
Unique Area of Study Portfolio is written to demonstrate the unique learning outcomes that can be found in the student's learning through experience.
Consult your advisor to ensure that you are able to use Credit for Prior Learning in your degree program. Discuss Course Match vs Unique Area of Study with your advisor.
Submission of the Letter of Intent and the deposit ($75.00 for undergraduate credit; $100.00 for graduate credit) is required prior to beginning the Credit for Prior Learning Portfolio.

The deposit can be paid by following instructions here. A deposit of $75.00 for undergraduate credit or $100.00 for graduate credit is required prior to beginning the Credit for Prior Learning Portfolio. This fee will not be refunded if you don't earn any credit.
I received an award letter, now what?
Your award letter will outline the credits that have been awarded. Discuss these credits with your academic advisor to make sure that you can use them in your degree program. You may choose to accept the whole award or part of it. Contact cpl@memphis.edu to communicate your decision.
The award letter will also contain information about how to pay for the credits you have been awarded. As with any course, you must pay before your credits can be posted.
Will my credit hours automatically appear on my transcript after I have received my award letter?
Your award letter is a notification of an award. As with any course, you must pay before your credits can be posted.
Does CPL credit effect my GPA?
CPL is not issued grades, but rather awarded credit hours. CPL cannot replace a failing grade or duplicate previously earned credit for a course.

Is there a deadline to enroll in the portfolio development course?
The portfolio development course should be completed within a semester. Therefore it is suggested that enrollment be made early in the semester. However, portfolio development courses are self paced, and enrollment can be facilitated at other times. Enrollment requests late in the semester may result in enrollment in the next semester.
How long does it take to complete a portfolio?
Portfolio courses are self paced. Our intent is that you complete the portfolio within a semester. An agressive 8 week timeline is suggested. However, since the courses are self pace, you will manage when you begin and when you complete the portfolio.
