Transportation

Transportation in Memphis, and in the United States more generally, is primarily automobile-based. In the state of Tennessee, as well as the neighboring states of Arkansas and Mississippi, you may legally drive with a valid drivers’ license from another country. In some states, however, you will also need an International Driving Permit, which you must obtain in your home country.

Memphis is served by Memphis International Airport (MEM) as well as by an Amtrak train station and inter-city bus lines such as Greyhound.

You should inform International Student Services (ISS) of your arrival plans by emailing theworld@memphis.edu, including the date, time and location of your arrival. The ISS Office will arrange to have a volunteer pick you up and bring you to the main campus, where they will help you get your campus ID and check you into your dormitory. You will be given further information regarding events for international students after your arrival.

For more information regarding border security and customs, along with much else, the Department of Homeland Security maintains a website directed towards international students at Homepage | Study in the States (dhs.gov).
