Within the United States, 2,152 higher education institutions offer online academic programs for students. Over 900 of these are represented on BestColleges.com's rankings for their academic quality, affordability, and overall online learning opportunity and only 21 of these universities can call themselves a Silver Medal School of Distinction. Schools earned a gold, silver, or bronze level of distinction based on the number of academic rankings on which they appear: Gold medalists appear on 15 or more rankings, Silver medalists are featured 10 to 14 times, and Bronze medal schools appear 5 to 9 times. Rankings developed by BestColleges.com are grounded in statistical information gathered from a variety of sources, including the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and College Navigator, both of which are hosted by the National Center for Education Statistics.
