Post-Master's Certificate in School Counseling

The Post-Master's Certificate in School Counseling is intended for those individuals who have a master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, or College Counseling, or any other counseling concentration from a CACREP-accredited program to obtain Licensure as a School Counselor in Tennessee.

Program Requirements

The Post-Master's Certificate in School Counseling requires successful completion of 15-20 hours of study. All courses are required.

Required:

     COUN 7640 Principles of School Counseling
     COUN 7542 Child Counseling, Consultation, and Intervention in Schools
     COUN 7826 School Counseling to Close the Achievement Gap
     COUN 7660 School Counseling Internship (6-8 hours)
     SPED 7000 Critical Foundation/Inclusive Education (without prior special education/disabilities course)

Admission Requirements:

Applicants must hold a Master's degree from a CACREP-accredited Counseling program with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Applicants should submit:

  1. A transcript of all undergraduate and graduate degree programs
  2. Three letters of recommendation
  3. A letter describing reasons for wishing to take a graduate certificate in the area of School Counseling and how the program corresponds with prior experience and anticipated career plans

Application Deadlines:

In addition to all UofM Graduate School deadlines, the Post-Master's Certificate Program has the following deadlines for admission:

  1. Fall: June 15
  2. Spring: November 10
  3. Summer: March 15
