BSED and MAT in Integrated Early Childhood
The Integrated Early Childhood (IEC/Early Childhood & Special Education) and Early Childhood Education (ECED) program prepares early childhood educators to thoughtfully and rigorously support young children’s learning and development in the primary grades (Pre-K–3) and beyond. Through coursework, field experiences, and student teaching (Residency I and II), undergraduate (BSED) and graduate (MAT) students acquire the knowledge, skills, and professional dispositions necessary to foster positive learning experiences across developmental stages (birth to age eight) within a variety of educational settings. Completion of the program leads to initial Pre-K–3 Tennessee State Teacher Certification.

Experience and Development
Students in the Integrated Early Childhood (IEC/Early Childhood & Special Education) programs gain valuable hands-on experience through field placements and student teaching in a variety of early learning settings. These
include preschools, Head Start centers, and elementary schools across Shelby County and surrounding areas.
You will:
- Develop strong knowledge of child development, curriculum, and instruction.

Where We Can Take You
Upon graduation, students in the Integrated Early Childhood (IEC/Early Childhood & Special Education), (i.e., BSED and MAT) degree tracks are eligible for initial Tennessee State Teacher Certification at the early childhood level (Pre-K through Grade 3). Graduates are well prepared for a wide range of professional opportunities, including:
- Lead teacher in public or private childcare centers, preschools, early childhood centers, and elementary schools
