MILE: Memphis Institute for Leadership Education

Program Components

  • Student protégés are matched with local business leaders in their major or area of study.
  • Together, protégés and mentors attend three 1.5 hour meetings per month.
    • Meetings feature collaborate learning opportunities to develop leadership, soft skills, and networking skills, as well as presentations by local and national speakers.
  • Student protégés and mentors also meet one-on-one for additional coaching and networking opportunities (or sometimes fun!)
  • MILE holds an end-of-year graduation dinner in April.
  • MILE holds at least one volunteer or community service activity per semester.

How To Get Involved

  • Protégé recruitment lasts from late January until early April.

  • Recruitment is for the following academic year (beginning in August).

  • There are three steps to becoming involved in MILE. If you miss a step, you will not be eligible for the program.

    1. Attend an information session.
      • All information sessions are online, last 30-40 minutes, and are offered about 8 times per week.
      • You can sign up for an information session here.

    2. Complete an application.
      • The link to the application will be sent after you attend an information session.
      • The application asks about your career and personal interests, your preferences in a mentor, and your commitment to the program the following year.

    3. Online Interview
      • Participate in a 30-minute online interview with a current MILE mentor, an FCBE faculty or the program director. The interview questions are similar to the application questions.

You must complete all three steps to be involved in MILE. Interviews will be completed by early April. You should receive your mentor match by the end of May.

  • We recruit mentors throughout the year but focus recruitment between mid-March and early May when we have an idea of the portfolio of majors interested in MILE.

  • Interested mentors can contact Dr. Kurt (kkraiger@memphis.edu). There will be a short virtual information session and a request to fill out a short application form.
