Project Description and Scope

The wired and wireless network on campus offers fast and reliable data connection speeds of up to 600Mbps. All University of Memphis students, faculty, and staff with a UUID and password can log into the um wireless network.

Over the summer, the wireless access points were upgraded across campus. This upgrade improves wired and wireless network experience in all buildings at all campuses. It is done by improving speeds, reliability, security, and management for emerging technology needs, and building capacity for future growth.

Project Benefits – Better Performance at Lower Cost

The network upgrade will bring:

  • Improved wireless coverage and speed by increasing access points from 2,500 to 3,600
  • Standardized minimum speed (10 gigabits) for all buildings
  • Increased maximum speed (40 gigabits) in selected locations in preparation for upcoming core upgrade (FY2020)
  • Enhanced management of access to the university network, improving security
  • Decreased annual network maintenance and licensing costs, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars over the life of the equipment

Network Upgrade Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

Will the network be off-line during a specific timeframe? Does that mean that the network is unavailable during that time or just intermittently?
Assume that no network will be available during the entire time frame for your building's date.

Will phones be affected?
Analog phones will not be affected. Voice over IP connections (VOIP) will be unavailable.

Will I need to reboot my machine after the network upgrade is completed?
Yes, a reboot is suggested.

Will this affect my wireless connection?
Yes, your wireless connection will not be available during the building's switch over.

Who do I call if I my network is not working?
Call the Service Desk at 901.678.8888. Please let them know the building and room number you are calling about.

Network Upgrade Tentative Project Timeline

Information Technology Services (ITS) will launch a network upgrade to all buildings on campus beginning May 7, 2018. Below you will find a schedule of buildings with dates and expected outage times.​

Known Issues
