Alumni Leadership Publish on Online EdD Comprehensive Exams
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Two proud alumni of the University of Memphis College of Education are helping shape the future of doctoral education. Dr. Topeka Small Singleton and Dr. Jaques D. Singleton, both faculty members at Arkansas State University, recently published a research article in the Arkansas Association of Teacher Education Journal that explores how EdD programs can better prepare students for leadership in the field.
Their article, “The Efficacy of Using Comprehensive Exams in a Large Scale Online EdD Program,” appears in the Spring 2025 edition (page 49) and offers insight into aligning doctoral training with real-world leadership challenges.
“Our recent research was inspired by the doctoral programs we both teach in at Arkansas State University, Educational Leadership P12 and Higher Education Administration,” said Dr. Small Singleton. “While the doctoral programs at AState have been highly successful, the programs are always looking to continuously align what practitioners actually do and the doctoral experience to ensure graduates are prepared for the real-world challenges that practitioners face. This is just one piece of the research that supports the need for such alignment in Ed.D. programs. Our owndoctoral experiences at University of Memphis were instrumental in preparing us for the research we conduct in higher education!”
The College of Education proudly celebrates the Singletons’ continued impact on the field and their contributions to building stronger, more practice-oriented doctoral programs.
