why study applied artificial intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is growing rapidly. Virtually every company across the globe is utilizing this technology to optimize its performance. Applied AI is the practical use of AI to solve specific, real-world problems. At FCBE, we are dedicated to equipping our students with the necessary skillsets to successfully navigate this in-demand industry.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in the computer and information technology occupations is projected to grow 11.7% (much faster than the average for all occupations, 4%) over the next ten years.
AI-related roles typically yield higher salaries. The median salary for positions such as Computer and Information Research Scientists, Data Scientists and Software Developers is $128,000 accordingly to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
AI is a rapidly growing field, and companies are looking for highly equipped and technical leaders to steer their organizations towards the future with integrated AI solutions.

In Fall 2026, we will be introducing the Master of Science in Information Systems (MSIS) with a concentration in Applied Artificial Intelligence. This program is specifically designed for early- to mid-career professionals who are actively seeking employment or advancement opportunities in a competitive, dynamic and ever-evolving field.

The program requires 33 semester hours of approved graduate studies. Twenty-one or more hours must be in MIS courses.

  1. Core Courses - 18 hrs. (6 courses)
    • MIS 7650 - Information Systems in the Global Enterprise
    • MIS 7700 - Fundamentals of Data Analytics

  2. Applied AI Concentration -15 hrs. (5 courses)

  • Applied AI Engineers:
    • Designs, develops and implements AI systems to solve specific problems, such as automating processes, optimizing operations or enhancing user experiences. 
  • AI Consultants:
    • Advises businesses on how to leverage AI technologies to solve specific problems or improve operational efficiency. They assess client needs, design AI solutions, oversee implementation and provide strategic guidance on maximizing the benefits of AI adoption.
  • AI Product Managers:
    • Oversees the development of AI-powered products, ensuring they meet user needs, solve problems effectively and align with business goals.
  • AI Research Scientists:
    • Bridges the gap between research and application, experimenting with new AI techniques to advance technology and improve real-world systems. 
  • Data Analysts:
    • Gathers, cleans and interprets datasets to help organization make informed decisions by identifying trends, answering questions and presenting findings through reports and visualization.
  • Data Scientists:
    • Uses AI techniques to analyze and interpret data, uncovering insights that inform business decisions and strategies.
  • Software Developers:
    • Designs, develops, tests and maintains software applications and computer systems.

The MS in Management Information Systems is a STEM-designated degree according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. International students completing the program may apply for three (3) years of work in the United States through the extended OPT program.

The MIS program has a strong international flavor. Our student body and faculty reflect the global reach of modern information architectures and applications. We are part of the University of Memphis #YouAreWelcomeHere campaign and strongly encourage international students to apply.

Because the MSIS degree is STEM-coded, international students who graduate may be eligible to work in the U.S. for 36 months after graduation–without corporate sponsorship!

admission guidelines

  1. U.S. bachelor’s degree or its equivalent, awarded by an accredited college or university.
    • The MSIS program will consider three-year degrees from accredited institutions. 

  2. GPA of 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale). 

  3. GRE score of 300 or greater. (GMAT scores also considered.)  

GRE scores are waived for:

  • Students with a bachelor’s degree and a 3.25 or better. 

  • Students with a post graduate degree in which they received a GPA of 3.0 or better. 

  • Students who have completed a graduate certificate in MIS with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. 

  • Students who have a proven working career in the IT field of 5 or more years and a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 2.75. 


Note: All transcripts and related institutions are reviewed by the graduate school for confirmation relative to our admissions criteria.

If an applicant is required to submit standardize test scores, below are the minimum requirements for admission: 

  • GRE: 300 or better (overall score) 

  • GMAT (traditional): 450 or better (overall score) 

  • GMAT (new/Focus): 455 or better (overall score) 

Proficiency at full communication using English is a central element of success in the MSIS program. 

  • DET (Duolingo English Test) - Overall minimum of 110 with no sub-score below 90. 

  • TOEFL - 550 on paper version, 80 on internet-based test with no sub-score below 20. 

  • IELTS - Overall minimum of 6.5 with no sub-score below 6.0. 

  • PTE (Pearson) - Overall minimum of 59
